I finally got around to bringing my dress in to get cleaned and preserved. It’s been hanging in my closet for 6 months. I was thinking about selling it, but I guess I’m keeping it. The dress (before alterations) was $5,000 and silk satin ballgown.
Anyway, there was a mark on the train from crossing the street at one point and I know a friend spilled some of his white wine on my skirt while we were dancing. So the folks at the cleaners — who are certified gown preservation specialists — said they would need to wet clean the dress to get the wine out. They said doing so might change the sheen and texture of the dress and it might shrink, but it was the only way for the wine stain not to turn dark brown. I reluctantly said okay. They then told me I had to pay upfront, which made me really uncomfortable — what if they lose or destroy my dress? I’m out my expensive dress and I already paid them? Plus it was $700 for the cleaning and preservation. Since I lugged my dress there I paid, but now I’m worried I made a mistake.
1) Did you clean/preserve your dress?
2) Did anything spill on it and did you wet clean it?
3) What was the cost?
