have you tried a slim aline? how about la sposa's fanal (my favorite?) you could definitely add embellishments to make it more maggie-esque.
as a bigger girl myself, i pretty much had to go with an a-line. the dropped waist, mermaid, anything fitted through the waist and hips, dresses just did not look good at all. what about empire waist? for example: maggie zaga, avery, kym. an asymmetrical waist might look good on you too: maggie cassie, delta, krisha, nadine lee, carrie.
OOO i love the la sposa dress! Im def looking for something like that.. I might just end up with dallas marie. I tryed it on a wial ago and i really liked it just everyone thought it was plain. We shall see ill keep looking.
I am also a bridal size 16, street size 12. I am not a "davids bridal" or Alfred Angelo kind of bride. I wanted something more. I found it frustrating but overall i ended up with the best dress. See some of my previous posts for dress pictures. My dress is a trumpet style by 2be. (In between an aline and mermaid). A very flattering fit with the right dress and curves. I am altering the zipper to a corset a must for that hourglass shape you want and our fiances love. haha Good luck and don't get frustrated with the itty bitty samples. Sometimes those dresses need some curves to look beautiful.
I am also a street size 12/bridal 16, and my dress is a Maggie. Her slim A-line dresses are Perfect for my curves and the quality is amazing. Also, her line has more then just white/ivory dresses (gold, silver, red, blue, purple). I can't really suggest a dress style for you, not having any idea about your figure, but I did just want to put it out there that many styles besides the A-line can work for woman with curves. I would call the bridal shop that is local to you and make sure they have seveal to try on in the correct size though.

So,
Ive been going dress shoping like crazy. I fit into a 16-18 bridal. I hate davidsbridal dresses and i dont really care for AA eaither. Im in love with maggie sottero... Beth,Phillipa,Karena Royale. Etc.. However i dont think fitted dresses will look right on me. I noticed A line dresses are better. But im wanting some kind of fit like the dallas marie maggie sottero dress. Anyone have suggestions on other companys? I dont really care for ball gown looking dresses because i feel bigger in them.
