I need help with finding a dress!
I’m getting married in November. I haven’t worked out the details of the ceremony yet (just booked the site), but it’ll be a relatively non-traditional, outdoor summer wedding. I’m really struggling with what I want to wear.
This is the dress I love:
It’s the Tea Rose dress by BHDLN http://www.bhldn.com/shop-the-bride-reception-dresses/tea-rose-dress/productoptionids/0848592b-d439-4e88-b197-5a7086f4ba0f
However, from reading the reviews I don’t think it will suit my body shape. At the moment I’m a big size 14 (US 10), aiming to be a size 12 (US 8) by the time fo the wedding. However, I have big boobs and I don’t have much of a defined waist.
Things I really like in a wedding dress:
- not white- maybe a pale colour like champagne or blush
- I really like lace, but it’s not a must
- SLEEVES: elbow, three quarter, long or a matching bolero. I don’t care- I hate my arms and they’re not going to be on display.
- Not a big gown- I’d prefer a shorter dress, especially since my arms will be covered
- something not really thin and flimsy- I like the idea of something with an internal corset that will give me a nice shape (but maybe if I have good shapewear on this won’t matter? I’m so lost!)
Does a dress like this exist? I haven’t gone dress shopping yet but I know I need to get onto it soon. I should also add that as a teen I was very uncomfortable with my body and avoided anything “girly” as a result I haven’t worn skirts or dresses since I was in my early teens. I defintely feel a lot “girlier” than I did then and I’m happy to be looking for a dress, but it’s just all a little overwhelming!
This post is a little rambly and unstructured, but I guess I’m asking for:
1. Suggestions of dresses similar to what I’ve described that will be flattering on my body shape
2. Suggestions on where to shop/what to ask the consultants
3. Reassurance that I’m not crazy for feeling overwhelmed and lost.
AGH! Thank you in advance 🙂

Dolly Couture might have something you’d like.
You could probably find something on etsy.
This dress is super cute. You could contact her to see if you could get the sleeves longer or in a different color that you like.

I second Dolly Couture.
I kind of agree that that the dress you’ve posted probably won’t suit you – it would be best for girls with smaller boobs.
Though I’m not necessarily saying that you won’t suit tea-length with your shape. I am planning to wear tea-length for our reception, and I don’t have much of a waist either, as well as being plus size and with F cup boobs.
I don’t know for sure, but I am banking on the concept of a wide, full-ish skirt and a wide neckline (wide v-neck or portrait neck or off-the-shoulder) together creating the illusion of a waist.
Bit hard to find that kind of dress, but here is one from Unique Vintage:
Silver Sixpence at Etsy:
Of the Dolly Couture ones, I think these would be the best for you (but you can pretty much get them made custom in any style/colour)

Thanks for your suggestions 🙂 I’ll check them all out.
Any more input is welcome!

Well, I owe you all a huge THANK YOU for your suggestions, because it’s led me to a dress I’m 98% sure I’ll be going will. It’s Dolly Couture’s Avila Bay, with some alterations. I’ll be getting it in champagne with half sleeves, an altered neckline at the back, a shorter skirt (because I’m short and I want to wear flats without looking too stumpy) and I’ll be adding some buttons.
This is the colour I’ll be getting- champagne.
Half sleeves, like this.
I’m so in love. I’ve been emailing one of the Dolly Couture reps and she’s so helpful. I never thought I’d be excited about a dress!!!

That dress is gorgeous!!! I was going to suggest a wider waistband (my current obsession), and that’s what you picked! Please let us know how it turns out and post pictures once it arrives– I can’t wait to see it!
