I think you need to go shopping and try dresses on. You may find something that you think can be princess like but perfect for the beach. I've seen lots of girls taking photos in the sand in their dress. Just have to keep in mind the time of year you are getting married and how hot it will be, etc.
You should have whatever dress makes your heart sing!
There are some things to consider though. My 1st wedding was on the beach and I chose the big ballgown with tulle skirt. My BMs wore long black dresses and guys were in tuxes. It made for great pics. I regretted the dress a little because it did not flatter my figure very well (gained weight from pre-wedding stress! - should have been a clue!) and I had a veil that was taken by the wind on the beach and kind of wrecked my hair.
As far as style goes, you don't have to have a certain style just because it's on the beach. There are casual beach weddings and very elegant ones. I have seen all different kinds of dresses for beach weddings.
Also, are you able to drive to South Padre Island or are you flying? Flying with the huge dress was also a challenge.
I agree with vintage2010. Go try a bunch of dresses on. You'll find what you are most comfortable in and what looks best.
I had this same dillema and made me second guess my dress a lot - you could probably find my post about it. But all the "beachy" wedding dresses were unflattering on me and didn't make me feel like a bride. After trying on dresses again - I fell back in love with my original choice. Go with what you love. Don't limit yourself.
It also made me feel better to look at all the pictures online of beach dresses, and you'll see how great brides look in all kinds of dresses on the beach.

We are getting married at South Padre Island and I have read a lot of advice saying that you should get a dress that is made for outside/beach weddings. I understand I do not want to be uncomfortable but I do not want to limit myself to only loose fitting, flowy dresses made of certain materials..
Am I being unreasonable? The location and my mood during the ceremony are important than the dress but come on now its still my dress?! Will I really be competely miserable if I choose a dress kinda in the middle of huge princess gown and the typical beach wedding dress??
