I need to decide on a dress like yesterday! my wedding is in May and at this rate I’ll end up wearing a onsie to my wedding. Bit of background we’re having an elegant romantic garden wedding on a beautiful Georgian property that’s been restored, I always imagined myself to look soft romantic and timeless – I decided I wanted a gown which would make me feel like a princess lace bodice and lace applique on the botton and minimal bling and of course soft tulle
When I first started looking for dresses I stumbled across the Stella York 5911 aka “The Dream Dress” it’s how I imagined my dress would be!
I would look but every Stella York Stockist I went to didn’t have it I could order it but they didn’t have the dress itself for me to look at – so I started the quest of trying to find something similar these are my top 2 picks;
Stella York 5959 aka “The Romance Dress” I tried this dress on and it was beautiful fit nicely (even though it was a few sizes too small) it was a bit plain so the consultant jazzed it up with a gorgeous belt and bingo sky rocketed to the number one spot on my list but I still had this icky feeling “Dream Dress” was still in the back of my mind I started to question maybe the skirt doesn’t look soft enough sure it’s got tulle but the outer layer is organza so the ‘look’ of the draping is different.
Casablanca 2077 aka “The Princess Fairytale” this one threw me off on a complete loop I was totally caught off guard expecting not to like it because it had little to no lace whatsoever but the beading appliqué was made to look like it was lace and the way in sparkled was magic! the way it flowed was beautiful! BUT there was no lace, was it too princess? I felt like it was too immature in a sense it had a lot of my personality in the dress bubbly, sparkly then that word again “PRINCESS” was I being delusional I mean sure everyone wants to be a princess but I’m not a princess? Then that icky feeling came back “Dream Dress”
After thinking about it now for almost 20hours I realised that both dresses had what the other lacked ‘Romance’ had the elegance of the lace and the romantic feel of being an ‘actual’ wedding dress and ‘Princess’ had me feeling like a princess and it had the flow and movement and soft luxurious-ness that I envisioned and I realised that the ‘Dream’ dress had this it had the lace on the top bodice the beautiful full tulle skirt and jazzed up with a belt would give it that bling factor? Should I just bite the bullet and order ‘Dream Dress’ or should I just suck it up and choose between the two?
So please bee’s help be decipher all these confused feelings.

I suspect that what you really want is a gown with a lace bodice and flowing tulle skirt. Those are the essential elements of “dream dress” that make it your dream dress. If the Stella York 5911 is not available to try on then how about lookig for something similar by another designer eg this David Tutera one http://davidtuteraformoncheri.com/wedding-dresses/115241/?fc=. This is a reasonably popular sort of style so if you go to a large bridal store they ought to have something like this. That will be the next best thing to trying on the Stella York 5911. If you like what you see then it might give you the confidence to order it in. Yourother 2 choices are beautiful but in assessing their merits you are applying logic when your heart says Stella York 5911! I say, follow your heart!

I like your dream dress the best, but I’m really not sure about ordering a dress you have never seen in person or tried on. Sometimes dresses look very different in real life than they do on the models. Are any stores willing to order it for you to try, or any stores in nearby cities who have a sample?
You shouldn’t “suck it up” and order a dress that you don’t truly love.

There is a similar dress in Stella York’s sister collection Essense of Australia which is very popular and maybe easier to find to at least try on, if anything it would give you a close enought representation of the Stella 5911 that you feel comfortable ordering.

KYpinkandlace: that’s exactly how I feel!! I have called every stockist of Stella York in Australia NO ONE and I mean NO ONE has this dress crazy!

If you have tried on other Stella York ballgowns with the same/similar waistline, and you like the fit and quality of those, you may want to give it a shot and just order it.

Well if you tried it on and loved it the only main difference is the lace on the skirt I would say just go ahead and order the Stella. That’s why I was saying just to try the Essense because they’re so similar.

lana1709: I agree with PP. You’ve tried on a VERY similar dress by the same designer. Order Dream Dress. You’ll never stop pining for it if you settle for one of the others.

Order your dream dress. But, is there a city near by that has it for you to see in person ? By the way, your dream dress has been my favorite also. Seeing it I wish I could have tried it on in person. I did go for a tulle skirt after realizing it made me feel young. 🙂 and not to old. So yes go for your dream dress and don’t settle.

Order dream dress! Especially if you’ve tried on that particular shape and general style and love it! I love the color!

I too am getting married in May and had a very similar vision to you and for quite some time dreamed of the stella york 5911…
I have tried LOTS of gowns and eventually chose my original ‘dream’ dress, which is a story for another day, BUT – During my search, I was lucky enough to find the 5911 in a store here in NZ and it was pretty but didn’t live up to my perceived idea of it. The lace is quite coarse and appears almost crochet looking (to me). Anyhow…. I then came across a new dress which I soon fell in love with that I think may just fulfil your criteria!
It’s the Allure 9014. I encourage you to track it down if you’re still lusting over the 5911 🙂
The stock photo’s really don’t do it any justice – it looks stiff on the model, but in person it is very delicate, frothy and romantic. When I tried it on, it gave me the feeling that I had imagined the 5911 would bring me. It looks very much like this in real life:

I think you should bite the bullet and get the Stella, as you’ll always be wondering “what if?” if you didn’t.
If you are looking for something similar, how about this David Tutera for Mon Cheri (has stockists in Australia).
Mind you, this collection has only just come out so you might have the same problems finding it here, though there is at least one store in Sydney that has the new collection as a friend of mine has tried some of them on.

lana1709: oh yay, so glad you were able to do that! $50 is really good – one store wanted to charge my friend $500 to ship a dress from interstate. Needless to say she didn’t take them up on that offer!
