Are you getting your dress altered at the bridal salon or through a private seamstress? Probably your alterations person could give you a timeline on how long it will take them to complete your dress.
Personally, my dress didn't come in until about a month before my wedding, and that was plenty of time. My alterations were simple, though (just shortening the length, adding a 3-point bustle, and sewing in cups).
Yes you can totally do this, it's what I'm doing. My dress arrived yesterday but I won't be starting fittings until about a month before the wedding (because they do them onsite) but I'm going to try it on next week, just so I remember what it looks like and to take lots of photos so I can make decisions on hair/jewellry etc. Not too sure how happy the bridal salon is about it, but hey, I paid A LOT for this dress so the way I see it, I should be able to go try it on as many times as I want!!!
@banana_anna: Oh good! I'm glad to hear you're doing this - makes me a lot more comfortable just going in and making sure it's exactly what I ordered.
Also thinking now of going somewhere else to get my alterations done.
Can I go in there, try it on...make sure it's okay, then leave with it?? (after I pay of course)
I had "try-on" appt about 2 weeks after I got the call that my dress had arrived! =)
I also did this- my dress came in almost a full year before the wedding, so way too soon for alterations. I went and tried the dress on, took lots of pics, but won't start alterations for a while. One of the ladies at the salon told me to start 3 months before, but I may start earlier since I am out of town and don't know how often I can get back home! So I will probably start around December/January for my June wedding.

As fitting (no pun intended) as it is, I started my first day of the 30 day shred today in order to get in tip top shape for the estimated arrival of my dress in a month...but I got the phone call today telling me my dress came in!
I lose a lot of weight due to stress and know that I will be a lot thinner come October. Can I go and just see the dress and wait on making any alterations? Have any of you done this?
Or when should I be scheduling my fitting if I plan to be a lot smaller by my wedding date?
I have no idea how this works!
