I bought my wedding dress back in March during a trunk show at a bridal shop. I waited 7 long months for it to finally come in and today I went to try it on. When they brought it out my heart sank. It did not look like the lovely high quality gown I tried on months ago and loved. Instead it looked like a cheaper version. I feel like the tulle, which was flowy on the sample was so stiff on my dress. The bodice was not the same quality either.
At this point the dress is paid for and I only have just over 3 months until the wedding so I am not changing dresses. I still love the dress I tried on back in March, but I just feel like my dress is not the same dress because it is not the same quality.
Is this normal? Are the samples nicer than the mass-produced actual dresses you receive? I feel so let down.
Here is a photo of my dress (left) and the sample (right)
Side note: I also ordered the belt to be ivory and it came in the brown, so that was disappointing as well

The sample has been worn many times over so thats probably where the softness and flowing come from because it has been “worked in”
Yours is brand new so its going to be stiffer that being said it shouldn’t be subpar quality
Ps i thought the pic of your dress was the sample and the sample was the dress you didnt like because honestly the pic on the left looks so much better than the sample to me

The diffference in the tulle is that the sample has been steamed and worn several times. When your dress has been steamed the tulle will soften and lay more smoothly. It looks like a lovely dress. Is it from the Allure Romance line? Why do you feel that it is cheaper?

I agree, I bet steaming and some wear will soften your dress. but really, I was just posting to say that, when I looked, I expected you to say the pic on the RIGHT was your disappointing dress. To my eyes, the dress on the left looks beautiful, esp with the brown belt! Very pretty.

sway0060: well that’s good to hear that it may just be stiff. The sample was way too large for me so that’s probably why the picture looks worse.
delphinia: I’m feeling much better that it may be a steam issue. I still feel like the bodice isn’t as good of quality, but the tulle was really bothing me.
The dress is Kitty Chen

ohnatto: thanks for the reply. I feel so silly now that it may just be a steaming issue! In the picture on the right I think the tulle looks nicer, but it does not look as good fit wise because it is way too big. Thankfully at least the dress fit pretty well when I went to try it on today!

I see no difference from the pictures. The brand new dress has never been worn so it is probably super stiff from being recently made and ironed or steamed. Like a pp poster said, the sample has been worn who knows how many times. You look beautiful though and I’m sure it’ll all come together when you decide in a final look or the big day.

I had to look twice because I like the dress on the left and thought you were disappointed with the dress on the right. If you don’t like the belt on your dress on the left, I’m sure you could purchase a extra free standing belt that would work with your dress. But, I like your dress. Nice crisp especially on top. Fits well. Looks like the skirt fts, too. Smile. very pretty.

shoebox: If you ordered the belt in ivory and it came in brown, that’s the store’s mistake, not yours. You should have them replace it with a correctly colored belt.

I think your new dress looks nicer actually! I had a tulle dress and it was too big and stiff. We took some layers out (being as I had 5 tulle & 1 satin) and it laid flatter! It will be fine!

Your actual dress looks ten times better than the sample! It it gorgeous and I actually think the brown belt really sets it off, I thought “wow!” when I looked at the photo on the left. You have nothing to worry about at all. I think I have a bit of dress envy!!

shoebox: I love yours!! As PPs have said, the new dresses don’t have some of the softness because they haven’t been tried on 1000 times. I think your dress is stunning and it looks much nicer than the sample!

I like your actual dress better personally. I thought that was the sample you were referring to at first before I read the comment, lol.

shoebox: I looked at the pictures first and then read the post….honestly the whole time I was reading the post after already looking at the pictures I thought that the picture on the left was the sample and the one on the right was your dress, and then was shocked to find out it was the other way around! Your dress is SO much more beautiful than the sample! The sample just looks old and used, yours looks so new and crisp!
Side note about the belt too…I love the brown with the colour of your dress! I’m not sure that the ivory would work with the colour of the dress. If you switch belt colour, post a picture of the ivory belt so we can see!
All in all you should be happy! You have a beautiful dress! 🙂

Honestly, your dress and the brown belt really work well together and quite frankly, I’m more impressed with the final product than the sample photo. Maybe it’s the lighting or photo quality but the dress looks much prettier in the picture on the left, in my opinion.
FWIW, your dress is stunning. I love the bodice’s detail.
