I really didn’t even know how to title this post! I’m from Brazil, and I’ll be travelling to USA to buy my dress, since the prices in here are like 3 to 4 times the price there! So, my father just took advantage of the US Airways miles (100% bonus!) promotion this month and bought miles for him, my mom and me. Now, we have to decide when to go (I’ll get married on Sep/2015), we were thinking end of march/begging of april 2015, but as I started reading the board I started to panic because apparently I should be going at leat 8 months before the wedding!! Also, are there any stores that actually have stock on dresses, because I love dresses from Pronovias, St Patrick, La Sposa (maybe I should just go to spain!!!), but I read they take a long time to arrive. I was thinking I would take the dress back home for alterations, but now I’m afraid I’ll have to go back to get the dress (and then the price won’t be that much cheaper, since there will be 2 trips abroad). Can someone please enlighten me!
PS: I thought of NYC, but the destination is open too, if there is anywhere else that should be better for dress shopping!

archi_bee: NYC would be fabulous for dress shopping! Although even NYC is pricier than other places in the US but if it’s already 3-4x less than Brazil then who cares! lol

Some places will be able to sell a sample dress – that you would be able to take with you but, I would assume, most designers take at least a few months to produce a dress. If you could come to NYC a few months sooner you may have more options (they may be able to ship the dress to you for alterations to be done). There are A LOT of stores in the city .. I live here and am hearing about new ones all the time! Some of the most or often sought after are: Kleinfelds (which does do a lot of selling to international brides), Saks Fifth Avenue, Wedding Atelier (they carry la sposa), Mark Ingram Atelier..and thats just a few. I would suggest checking out their websites – Kleinfelds has an extensive list of their available designers and gowns and making a few phone calls
I hope this helps even in the slightest way!

Hi! Congratulations on your upcoming nuptuals!
I too am traveling to NYC to try on dresses! We are going to Kleinfeld’s and Pronovias.
It is true that often you should purchase your gown well in advance, but maybe call and explain your situations. Sometimes these stores can place a rush order and sometimes they can sell you a sample. I know Kleinfeld’s is particularly used to working with international brides. I would give them a call and see what they can do for you!

I think you should definitely go earlier not to limit you selection if you can. I think Kleinfeld’s will ship the gown to you once it arrives. You can only take samples right home with you, and most bridal salons have a rather limited selection of samples they are willing to sell if any at all. I might also consider Vows. They are in Boston (they also have a TV show) and it is all samples, so any gown you find there you would be able to take with you that day (and you would save even more money). Not sure how long you are planning on staying in the states, but Boston and NYC aren’t too far from each other, and there are buses you can take from one to the other. Might be fun to spend a few days in each city and make a trip out of your hunt for the gown.

- Wedding: March 2015 - City Winery New York, NY
archi_bee: I just finished my dress shopping and live in NYC. I went to Gabriella’s, Sak’s Fifth Avenue Bridal and Kleinfeld Bridal. I highly reccomend Gabriella’s or Saks’s Fifth Avenue. I suggest avoiding Kleinfeld’s. Kleinfeld’s was awful and their selection was severely lacking.
Also, since you like Pronovias, you should consider making an appointment at the New York store.
I would also suggest watching for sample sales if you’re hoping to take a gown home with you same day.

You should go at least 7 month before. Dresses take 4-6 month to arrive. I am assuming you can have it shipped internationally from bridal shop.
