    Hey Bees!

I am going shopping with two of my Bridesmaids this weekend to get a preliminary idea of what we like for dresses. I have already decided that I will choose a designer and a color, and then the girls can select a dress they like from those criteria. To me, this is the best way to make sure that everyone feels comfortable in their dress.

Buuuuuuuut, now that I've seen the various fabrics I don't really like how they look together. Would it be too restrictive/unfair of me to narrow their choices down to any dress in this color and fabric after I've already told them they can pick their own dress, but only specified the color/designer restriction?

I know this probably sounds paranoid, but I really just want to be considerate. Tell me what you think!

I also don't like the look of mixed fabrics. I gave my girls designer, color, fabric and length. Not an issue, think of all the brides who just pick a dress for their girls.

Does the same fabric come in different cuts?  That was one of my main concerns for my bridesmaids, as they totally range in size.

Personally mine are wearing the same color from the same place, but their fabrics are mixed and I think it looks nice.

But to answer your question directly, it all depends on your girls, but I don't think it's unreasonable.

    I don't think that's unreasonable at all.

Just make sure that you really are okay with any of the choices they may make because you can't completely rescind on the offer to pick their own dresses after they do so. :)

@NauticalBride2011: Yes, the fabric comes in lots of different dress styles. I have several different body types in my lineup, which is why I wanted to let them pick their own to begin with.

@brideatbeach: Sound advice:) I did lots of looking online at weddings with mismatched dresses, and I'm pretty comfortable with the idea of what the finished look will be.

Perfectly reasonable.  I specified brand, color, and fabric, too.

I think you should pick out the dresses yourself and let the pick out from the dresses that you chose. They could chose the length and which one looks best on their body. Maybe if you have 7 BMs give them 4 dresses to chose from. If you have 3 BMs give them 2 to chose from.

Jasmine bridal has dresses that can be made into 3 different lengths (tea, knee and floor) most are made from the same fabric and I think the prices are reasonable. We got a floor length for $160.

I asked my girls to choose Alfred Angelo dresses in grape chiffon. They all found something they liked. You can definitely narrow it down to a specific fabric. :)

@Klb5882: Length is a good consideration, but since it's going to be a May wedding I would think they would all pick something knee-length or higher. Plus, I don't have anyone who would be uncomfortable in that length in my bridal party, so I think that will be fine without me specifying.

@iheartnerds: I am using Alfred Angelo as well, but my color is Dusty Rose (sage green for the men). How was your experience with them? Any advice you could give me about the dresse? Anything I should know?

I am doing the same thing.  I am picking the designer, color, and fabric.  Different fabics together can look messy. Think of it this way: most brides don't let their BM's choose anything but the size of the dress.  I think this method is more than fair. And if you pick a designer with lots of dress, they should have plenty of options.

I am choosing drsigner, color, fabric and i may even chose like 10 dresses i like for my BM to chose from so i think it is very reasonable.

Not unreasonable at all. I think most brides who allow their BM’s to choose their dresses decide on a specific fabric to go with. I know I did. I told them the color, length & fabric that I wanted and I let them choose the style. It worked out perfectly. Everyone got something that they loved and that suited their bodies. I highly doubt that your ‘maids will be upset that you want a specific fabric.

I wanted same color/same fabric.  The choices for the designer we were looking at were charmeuse and shantung or dupioni...Totally different textures!  The colors weren't really the same from one to the next either.  I had one BM that likes clingy, sexy clothes and another that does not.  I was really worried that the first one would pic charmeuse (which she did), but the second agreed and looked great in it.

@Melini: That really describes the reservations I'm having about not specifying a fabric. I don't really hate the look of different textures, but the color of the dresses seems to change a lot as the fabric changes. I think  what you've said is a lot closer to the problem I have with the different fabrics....the colors just don't jive.

I'm glad you all think I'm pretty reasonable:) I just want my girls to be happy!

@MrsCarnival:  I think that they will probably not like the look of the mismatched fabrics if you show them.

You should decide the fabric too, most of the colors of fabrics doesn't look in the same way...

@Melini: You're probably right. Most of my girls have a either a pretty good eye for fashion/design, or absolutely no strong feelings on what fabric they wear:) It's a nice combination!

Beyond reasonable.  I'm not a fan of mixed fabrics either, and I plan on doing exactly what you're doing...giving them a fabric type, designer, color, and and length, and letting them pick the neckline.

I think saying, any dress in the same fabric (Ex. Chiffon, Satin, Organza), color (Ex. shades of red, or strictly cherry red) and length (Ex. floor length, tea-length, cocktail).  To me those are the three kill elements that I look for in "mis-matched" dresses, but still allowing some freedom of personal style! =) Giving them options period is more than generous!

It's only unreasonable if they've already purchased their dresses.  If not, no harm no foul.
