I started looking casually about 13 months or so before, but didn’t commit to buying anthing until about 8 months before – the shop i ordered from said it would take about 5-6 months to come in, and I wanted to ensure I’d have plenty of time to get any alterations done.

my budget was about $2500 too, but I was shocked to find tons of dresses that were WAY under that, I spent just under $1500 and got the dress of my dreams!

good luck and have fun!

Since I had only 3 months to pull off my wedding, I purchased online.  I got my dress dress for under $700.  I wouldn’t have been able to get it otherwise because Badgley Mischka dresses normally sell in the 4ks.

I agree that you should casually look now and make your finally decision 8 months prior to your wedding.  Buying to early could mean that you can be a 2 dress bride.  Also remember about alterations.  So your 2500 budget should include alterations.  Also I would include any little incidentals such as undergarments and possibly a veil.

Good luck and enjoy…..

I just purchased mine and mine is in 2 years, but I simply could not turn down the bargain I got from a wedding shop on groupusa.com. It was on clearance from 800 to 200–and the last one! It was beautiful ivory dress with embroided roses and leaves. So I will be just placing it in a safe place til it gets closer to my wedding day. 🙂

That’s a generous budget, you will find something you love for sure!  Not a Monique Lhuillier or Jim Hjelm, but something more mainstream like a Maggie Sottero, Pronovias, Mikaella, Mori Lee etc.  You’ll have so much choice at that price range!  I got my WTOO dress for about $1000 CAD.

As for timing – I would start looking about a year ahead of time, so you don’t feel rushed.  You should have your order in about 8 months before, but it really depends on the designer and the dress.  Just go shopping early, and don’t give in to pressure!  There are so many two-dress brides on here, and usually it’s a similar reason – felt pressured by mothers and salespeople and time.

I agree with the PPs, start looking now and have fun!  But don’t commit for a couple more months.  The new collections were just released and there will be another one before you have to commit.

I bought my dress 2 months ago and my weddings not until June 2012.

I paid $2000 for it before tax.

I wanted my wedding to match my dress so I needed to find a dress as a starting point… =)

If you’re not adverse to shopping sample sales, you could very well grab a designer dress for $2500 or less. I found my Christos (Julianna) dress at a boutique’s sample sale for $999, and it was in near pristine condition. I’m told that particular style normally retails for close to $4K.  So definitely take your time and be open minded about trunk shows and sample sales!!

I started shopping about 10 months prior, and put in the order for my dress 9 months prior.  Most girls probably like to give themselves more time to shop around, but I was lucky to find her early on in the game! 🙂  My dress cost $950 with the store discount (originally $1030), before alterations.

i started shopping last week so 16 months before the wedding.  i didn’t have a budget in mind so when the consultant asked me at the first shop, i told her to bring them all out.  i didn’t want to miss out on a great dress.  the cheapest dress i tried on was wtoo and the most expensive was amsale.  i also tried on dresses in the $5-7k range at priscilla and then some monique lhuilliers at a small boutique.  i really wanted to fall in love with a vera wang or a monique lhuillier but nothing looked good onme. i ended up loving the watters and the wtoo lines the most.

i bought one of my dresses today and they gave me half off so it was under $500.
