So I know I should probably seek medical attention if I'm really worried, but I've tried googling this and have gotten conflicting answers. I got a bad sunburn over the weekend (outside without sunscreen--very very stupid!!) on my shoulders. The area has been very red and painful. I went to the gym this morning and got all sweaty. I noticed when I came back that teeny tiny blisters had formed on the area that was most badly sunburned. When I looked this up, I found some sites that said this is a natural progression of a sunburn, resulting from the damage to the skin. Other sites said that it's the result of sweat coming into contact with the burn. So my question is, which is it? And what can I do to make it better? I put aloe vera gel on it this morning, which seemed to help a little...
@hilsy85: You have sun poisoning. Typically happens with a bad sunburn. Try putting vinegar to the burn. It's painful at first, but it relieves the pain.
@DesireeAnne: Boo :( I'll have to try that when I get home. Is the aloe vera gel going to help at all? Should I try like neosporin or something?
That sounds really painfuL! Im bumping this thread so you can get more responses!
@hilsy85: I'd put aloe on it to keep it moisturized as well. But vinegar definitely helps with the heat/burn.
@PitBulLover: Aw thank you!! :) It is painful--I feel like such an idiot. I think I was so excited about seeing the sun/a beautiful day that all smart thoughts of applying sunscreen just went straight out of my head.
Hmm, google is telling me that sun poisioning is usually accompanied by chills, fever, nausea...I haven't had any of that.
I've had a burn like that once before. I think once is enough, lol. It's just the natural progession of the burn. I used aloe gel and let it run it's course. The skin will probably peel next - so sexy! ;)
Don't worry too much, hope you feel better!
I had this a couple weeks ago. Honestly the best thing ever was tea. Make tea on the stove and once it's cooled use a wash cloth and soak it in the tea and then put on the burn. The tea pulls the heat out and helps it heal quicker. I did it and it was the best relief ever. I had to do it a couple times, but soo much better than vinegar IMO
@Miss Lilac: haha gotta love that peeling!! I once saw a woman on the subway who had a sunburn that was peeling and she was sitting there peeling off her skin and dropping in on the floor. SO NASTY!!
@sdrury89: Hmm interesting! What kind of tea did you use--black? Green? Herbal? I think we only have mint and lemon at home...
@hilsy85: No. No she was not. No, no, no. Ahhh! Lol. That is SO bad. I would have said something to her for sure. Or switched cars... something!
@hilsy85: blehhh Im going to vom!!
Dont feel like an idiot. On Easter, my husband and I drove 1.5 hours in his convertible around noon when the sun was very bright and strong. I was wearing a sundress and didnt even think about sunscreen! And then I had a very oddly placed, seat belt shaped sunburn!
@Miss Lilac: Yuup unfortunately she was. I just averted my eyes and prayed for my stop to come quickly, lol.
@PitBulLover: Hah aww...I'm sorry to laugh, but that must l ook funny!! Bad tan lines are the worst. And I totally would not have thought to put on sunscreen before riding around in a car either.
I am no nurse, but I live in Arizona! :) Lol And I love the outdoors, so I've had more sunburns then.... Well, then I should have. The blisters/bubbles are TOTALLY normal. It happens when you perspire and it gets trapped under your now dead skin.... Really gross, but totally ok. :) It should now just peel over the next day or two. I take an Ibuprofin (sp?) or two as well. It seems to help, but maybe it's my placibo. :)
I have never heard of tea before! I;ll have to keep that in mind...
Oh, and the lady on the subway... NO! SHE WASN'T?! Lol
Good luck and hope you feel better soon...
@Tara Goodell: Thank you so much!! That's exactly what I thought--that it had to do with the fact that I had gotten sweaty at the gym :) Gross, but better that to hear that I have sun poisioning, lol.
@hilsy85: Much better! I've gotten so burned while tubing down the river that I'd gotten some sun poisioning before. But it was not what you are explaining.... It was the chills. Cold and hot... Almost like you have the flu.
And hey....Maybe after the peal you'll have a nice tan? My skin is sooo darn white that it is all... burn....peal...and back to white. No middle ground. Lol :)
@Tara Goodell: Haha my DH is like that--he'll get super red (like he did this weekend) and then it'll fade and he'll be back to pale skin again--just with some more freckles! Poor guy :)
@hilsy85: Yes, I feel his pain... Lol I tell my friends that one day all of my freckles will meet up, and then I will look really tan. HAHA
This happened to me this past february ON MY FOREHEAD! Ahh haha it was terrible but the blisters were gone in about one day and the redness left after a few. I didn't do anything special to it, I would probably only mess with it if it's extremely painful or bothersome.
@hilsy85: I just used the cheap Lipton black tea that was on sale. lol. I wouldn't use any flavored tea just in case it stings or burns. The black tea didn't burn at all, just instant relief. And it helped with the peeling. I've lived in Florida for most of my life so I'm used to the sun burn and this was the first and only thing I've ever done that actually gave me real relief.
@hilsy85: That. Is. Disgusting.
Taking Ibuprofen (600 mg with food every 6-8 hours) or Benadryl will help cut the imflammation which will relieve the severity of your symptoms. Aloe helps too. And part of it is just waiting it out. i've had a bad burn once and it was terrible :(.
@PitBulLover: Haha! I went out of town in my convertible last weekend and got a seatbelt sunburn! My friends called me the "safe lobster" :)
@rosegirl: Ahh that is bad!! Luckily, I use moisturizer every day that has SPF 15, so my face actually did not get burned. I need to find body lotion with spf in it, lol.
@sdrury89: I'll see if I can pick some up, thanks!
@biscuit: Yeah I think I will try some painkillers--thanks! And sunburns are no fun, that's for sure :(
It sounds like the blisters are definitely from your work out and not from sun stroke/sun poisoning. I would only be concerned if you are giving off a ton of heat from that area and you have other symptoms like chills, fever, and nausea. It sounds like you don't though.
The absolute best way to help a burn that has blistered this way is actually plain yogurt! Don't use the aloe gel because it often contains alcohol and this won't heal as fast. You can apply plain yogurt directly on the burn and also eat some to get quicker healing. I've also heard of people using some types of tea, but for this specific burn I would use the yogurt.
@west.coast.blonde: Yikes! I've already put aloe on it...but I don't see alcohol as one of the ingredients. It says its "100% pure aloe vera gel", whatever that means. Hmm I'll have to try the yogurt too!
How have I lived most of my life in a desert, and NOT known about tea and yogurt?! The stuff you learn on the bee.
west.coast.blonde: What is it in the yogurt that helps? It sounds like it would be kinda soothing... just for the cool softness. lol Then sticky. Haha
hilsy85: Let us know if/what you end up trying...and how it works. :)
@Tara Goodell: The yogurt has good bacteria that helps to soothe as well as heal your skin faster (both internally and externally). More importantly it helps to restore your skins acid/alkaline balance (pH).
I'm a big fan of the tea remedy! I use brown paper to lay it on the skin, though. The best thing to do for a burn is to keep it moisturized.
@helenberrycrunch: Completely off topic (sorry) but every time I see your posts in the morning, I get hungry for Captain Crunch berries. Is that weird? Lol
I will have to try the tea! And I completely agree with you in the moisture. That is what helps the most for me...to get it to go away the fastest, is to keep it moisturized...
@hilsy85: You've gotten a lot of advice already, all good. But it sounds like a second-degree sunburn. I got one on my foot of all places while I was in Maui. It burned first and then blisters appeared. It will peel and heal on its own but now, wait for it...you're more at risk for skin cancer later on in life.
I've had two basal cells so far and numerous pre-cancerous moles removed. Not to scare, just keep an eye on that area from now on:)
@AnnieAAA: I wonder if our sunburns look the same :-)
And hilsy - its definitely a laughable matter as Im sure AnnieAAA can attest to!
@PutABirdOnIt: Yup, I know it :( I do see a dermatologist regularly (just had a check up in March, and will go again in Sept) and I'll be sure to take care the rest of the summer. It's just so annoying to have uneven, weird looking tan lines!!
@hilsy85: To be truthful I'm actually just jealous that you have enough sun to burn! It's still super chilly here!!
I would definetly recommend this cream: http://www.yesstyle.com.au/en/info.html/pid.1011052211. I have pale skin and burn easily and have found this cream a godsend. It really helps with the pain and itching too.
Oh man... I barely know what it's like to sunburn without blistering, I've even ended up with blackened spots before (evil day star!) Even with the highest SPF available, I still blister.
@west.coast.blonde: We were in Kentucky this past weekend, and we had one gorgeous day!! Like I said before, I was so thrilled to see the sun that the thought of sunscreen went completely out of my head :)
