We're having a picnic themed wedding next August. This is going to be a pretty casual DIY event, but we'd still like to get food that's a bit more interesting than just box lunches, and we're thinking that getting a buffet dropped off and set up might be the way to go. Our food budget is around $25pp... hence the desire for drop-off service. (Beverages/dessert not included in this number.)

So, have any of you done drop-off catering? Who did you use?

@apinetree:  Congrats on your bif day!  I would highly recommend reaching out to Washburne Culinary Institute. They're a very affordable solution that I recently used for a high profile event I planned for work.  I was able to do a combination of passed foods and different stations, all staffed, for around $30/person.  So I imagine you'd be able to get a stellar menu within your budget for drop off, or with minimal staffing.  The food was to die for and all of our guests were floored when they learned it was all done by culinary students.

One of the things I loved best about working with Washburne is they really took the time to listen to what we wanted to achieve.  I have a colleague who used them the same week I did, and they conceptualized two very different menus and styles.

If you're interested, I'd be happy to share the contacts I have there.

    Happy planning!

A co-worker of mine used Smoque to cater her laid-back, picnic-themed restaurant. Not sure if you're interested in BBQ, but if so, you might want to check them out:

Great, thanks! I've been looking at Smoque and other BBQ places. I actually worked with some Washburne students (in a totally non-culinary context) at a previous job... don't know why it didn't occur to me to contact them! I'll PM you for those contacts.
