I’m hoping someone can help, I bought a floor model wedding dress as is at the bridal shop for a great price only thing is I need to have it dry cleaned and also alterations done. The seamstress said to get the dry cleaning done before alterations but when I took it to the dry cleaners he said the opposite that I do the dry cleaning after alterations. I really am confused because I know when people generally buy a new dress and alterations are done they do not get it dry cleaned before the wedding. But then the dry cleaners stated that she could make marks on the dress during alterations. But if I get the dry cleaning done after alterations could there be a chance of shrinking the material.
Thanks and I hope someone can help with this, I’m going to try and call another seamstress and dry cleaner tomorrow.

I’m confused… what sort of alterations person would make marks on a dress?
and if there is any chance that the material could change/shrink, then doesn’t that mean you should definitely get it cleaned before the alterations?

When I bought a sample, I had the dress cleaned before alterations. Mine was silk though and silk shrinks after cleaning.

i was told by the cleaners to do alterations first because the dirt on the bottom of the hem would be more to clean and they couldnt just leave the dirt there. i havent gone to someone about alterations yet but i only need the bottom shortened since im fun sized lol

@cr6zy: but that doesn’t make sense! I’m having a brand new dress altered, and it’s not like it will be MORE “dirty” after they’ve altered it; like, I’m not going to dry clean my brand new dress after it’s been altered!

@red_rose: it may get dirty at the alterations place. it *shouldnt* but that dosent mean anything.
