I have always used laundry softener. When I moved in with SO he wanted to use dryer sheets. Currently we are not using softener because our washer leaves it pooled on our clothes. I don't like using dryer sheets because I think it makes my clothes feel weird and crusty. I think softener makes them come out feeling more wearable.
@MsBrooklynA: that's actually what got me thinking about this - I grew up using softener, but when I moved in with J, he uses sheets, so I just kind of adapted to his way of doing things. I feel like our clothes are still so staticky though!
I could never use softener cuz it breaks me out too bad, so I use unscented dryer shets
I had some bad experiences with my old washer + softener ruining some of my clothes... so I stick with the dryer sheets.
We don't have our own washer and dryer right now, so it really depends. If I'm washing my clothes at my mom's house, I only use fabric softener. If I'm at the laundromat, I use both.
The laundromat always makes my clothes smell like they're burnt. The fabric sheets help with that.
We use the Purex sheets and I absolutely love them! The same sheet is both the detergent and the dryer sheet. They really are a lazy chicks best friend.
I guess I always thought you could only use liquid softener if you had a separate insert for it, rather than just dumping it in, since that's what my Mom's machines had. So I've always used dryer sheets!
I LOVE the smell of dryer sheets. I also really like the smell of fabric softener, but for whatever reason I noticed that it tends to leave grease looking stains on some clothes so I stopped using it a few years back.
I stopped using dryer sheets years ago when I figured out they were the cause of black spots on my uniforms (back in the day when I wore a uniform).
I haven't bothered to use anything since and our clothes are just fine. I also use less than 1/2 the recommended amount of detergent.
@soonerpsych: thats what I thought too. We bought liquid softener when we moved to our house but our washer doesn't have separate area so we have stuck to dryer sheets. Can you use liquid if you don't have it?
We use dryer sheets right now, but when I went home for Christmas my mom told me to make sure not to use them when we get our own washer/dryer because it will ruin the dryer quicker. I have no idea if it's the truth but her clothes always look nicer than mine!
I use fabric softner because I don't dry all of my clothes in the dryer. Right now I love using http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/product-testing/from-the-lab-blog/purexs-new-crystals-fabric-sof.
It smells really good and our clothes continue to smell great for days.
Dryer sheets no fabric softener dispenser in our washer.
@MissTatas: You can, but it's a lot more of a hassle - you have to put it in during the rinse cycle, so you have to catch the washer when it's full/almost full at the very beginning of the rinse cycle, and then add the softener to a spot where there's mostly water, not clothes, so it dilutes before touching any fabric, or it will leave spots.
@arenyth: I'm really curious about whether that's true! I wonder what harm they do to the dryer...
I use dryer sheets. Thats' all my parents have ever used and all that I've ever used. I love the way they smell (and make my clothes smell)!
@arenyth: I'm pretty sure that isn't true. As I said, my parents have always used dryer sheets and we did a lot of luandry in our house. Their first washer and dryer set lasted for 15+ years and the ones they have now are over 10 years old and have never had any problems.
dryer sheets for sure.....gain scent to be exact.
I could sniff them all day long.
I use both! I have a Downy ball that I fill with fabric softener and throw in the washing machine when I start it. But if I forget, I use the sheets. In the winter, I use both. I hate static.
We usually hang most of our clothes on drying racks (or ouside on a washline in the summer), so we don't use the dryer all that often except to fluff our clothes a bit. So we use fabric softener. I like to water it down though since it's so concentrated now. I hate the flim it leaves on clothes when there's too much in there. Works just as well!
Our new washer/dryer actually recommends using dryer sheets. but we like using fabric softener so we'll see how it turns out.
We use the bounce thing you stick in the dryer and it last a few months. Me and the SO both love them!!!
We use both. If I can catch the rinse cycle then I use the fabric softener, but if I am out of the house or don't hear the rinse cycle come on I just throw a coupel dryer sheets in. I can't stand wearing clothes that didn't have fabric softener or dryer sheets used! So stiff
We never used anything until we moved into our new house. We have to use dryer sheets because there was SO much electricity in everything. Our bed was a fireworks show most nights.

Which do you use, and why?
ps - if anyone uses wool dryer balls, I want to hear everything about your experience, because I'm considering getting a set.
