Due date in a week and the baby hasn't dropped--normal?

    Hi momma bees,

I'm wondering if any other first-time moms have babies who didn't drop, or dropped super last-minute.  My OB thinks that our son will make his debut a week later than his due date, because he hasn't dropped yet (and subsequently, my cervix is high and back). Our son's head is down, but not engaged yet.

My understanding is that second and third-time moms can have their babies drop only during delivery.  The What to Expect book seemed to indicate that dropping is the norm for the first baby, and that it could have happened up to a month ago (around 36 weeks).

    Any experience with this?

Most of the first borns I know over the last few years were born a couple weeks after due date, if that helps! Best of luck!

My water broke at 38 weeks and he hadn't yet dropped at that point. I was about 3 cm dilated and with pitocin my labor progressed pretty quickly and with no problems.

Dropping won't truly predict labor anyway, so I wouldn't use his not having dropped as an indication that he'll be late. My SIL's 1st baby didn't drop until she was 2 days from labor (baby born 1 day late).

My son dropped at 35 wks and was born ON his due date. I was also 2cm dilated at 37 weeks...My OB was convinced I'd go early (around 37 weeks), I didn't.  BUT your OB isn't really wrong either :) I was told that most 1st time moms do go "late"...

Totally normal!  Some babies don't drop at all.  I don't think I dropped with either of mine.  Most first time moms deliver after their due date, but I know some that delivered early.  I was only in labor for 3 hours total with my first, but 5 with the second.  Babies work on their own time!  Congrats and good luck!

Honestly, I have no idea when or even if Addie dropped.  I carried her kinda low throughout the whole pregnancy, so I don't think there was ever a moment when I thought, "Hey, she dropped!"  She just came out when she was ready.  :)

I never dropped until my water broke.  MB was born four days early!  :-)

Thank you, bees.  I am feeling more relaxed about this... the little guy will arrive when he's ready, no matter what the OB thinks.
