I know that these are two completely different places and each have pros and cons…but wondering if anyone has been to either, or BOTH?? We are trying to nail down a destination for our wedding which will be late summer/early fall 2013. So we need to decide soon! We are both very laid back, but also enjoy a good adventure- hiking, rainforests, snorkeling…and want to be able to leave the resort/villa and explore safely, which is why we have ruled out many places. He wants clear blue waters, and from what I see it looks like virgin islands for that..but Costa Rica seems like it would be more cost effective for our guests, which is a big deal to us. Also heard great things about Costa Rica for excursions, but better snorkeling/waters in Virgin Islands. Decisions, decisions!! Any recommendations from well traveled bees?? Thanks!!

I’ve been to both, and while I liked the Virgin Islands (great snorkeling) I was completely blown away by Costa Rica. It was so beautiful and there was so much to do (I went ziplining, horseback riding, hiking, mudbaths, etc.), and everyone was so friendly. I stayed here: http://www.riu.com/en/Paises/costa-rica/guanacaste/hotel-riu-guanacaste/index.jsp’ defer=’defer
and absolutely loved the area. It was completely safe and just so much fun.
While I liked the Virgin Islands, they’re tiny and they get a lot of cruise ships. Which means there are just people everywhere. All the time. Everywhere I went had that feeling of Times Square–congested with people & noise & people trying to get you to buy things. I really enjoyed my time there, but my overall feeling when I think about my time there is “frantic.” Too many people in too small of an area.
If given the choice between the two, I would do Costa Rica in a heartbeat.

@BagsnBooks: Thank you SO much! We might need to look closer at the Riu for the wedding because it looks beautiful AND affordable. I have heard such great things about CR and just seems like “us.” 🙂

@FutureMrsTurner: If you have any questions abou RIU PM me. My best friend loves that chain of resorts–she’s been to about 5 of them & has had nothing but good things to say about them. It was my first time at an all-inclusive so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I really enjoyed myself. I don’t know if it’s on the website, but the little beach by the hotel is really lovely (although the water isn’t that sparkling blue your FI wants). There were monkeys in the trees & there were horses available for riding on the beach.

@FutureMrsTurner: Hey, sorry to be random but I wanted to know if you decided on costa rica and if so…where?

@Lily_of_the_valley: Well, we actually ended up going with the virgin islands, due to a few family members who were uncomfortable traveling to a foreign country (silly, I know, but we couldn’t sacrifice them not being there). We actually had a place picked out and everything for CR. However, I’m still very happy with our choice of the USVI, as there will be a lot for our guests to do and no passpots needed, beautiful water and beaches, etc. And our reception spot is right on the beach, and just perfect. Good luck and happy planning! 🙂
