People can find their own travel agents, too – you don’t need to provide that information if it’s too much to sort through.

I am not having a DW, but I defintiely wouldn’t worry about setting people up with a travel agent. People can either use their own travel agent, or book online like you said. Some people may have points/memberships to certain hotel chains that they could use. The only reason I would say do it would be if you could get any substantial discount for people by having them book through a specific person.

i LOVED having a travel agent.

we used destinationweddings.com… it was $50 to work with her but that $50 goes towards your trip if you book. we found it incredible… because she handled everything and if we had people asking us questions we could just say “contact shawna”. and they did. people were free to book through someone else if they wanted but she was able to get us a better rate than they would’ve gotten online. and everyone booking together gave us a bit of a kick back because we had so many people. we will all be arriving together and leaving together and i think it’s nice! we didn’t have to worry about knowing who has booked and who is coming because it was all on a “booked guests” list that the travel agent updated. and people really appreciated the payment plan. I honestly loved it and couldn’t imagine going through the process without one…

@mu_t:  This is a great idea!  And definitely one issue I’ve been contemplating myself, so it’s great to hear such a positive review of your experience with them! It does really make it sound like it simplifies the process!

@Grossern:  ya i thought it was great and definitely took the stress off me. there is SO MUCH information on the internet, it was good to have it all stream lined into someone who is knowledgeable. i read a lot before booking and heard stories about people using any random travel agent and it being a disaster… i felt comfortable going with this company because they had to back it up, ya know? they were pretty well organized and definitely helped make it easier on our guests… just my opinion!

@mu_t:  That’s really great to hear, bc the ONE thing I keep hearding from FFIL is, “have you spoken with a travel agent yet?  We need to figure out how to coordinate this and keep it simple for everyone as a group.”  As many people as I’ve spoken with at specific resorts and wedding coordinators, I hadn’t yet really spoken with a travel agent and wondered if it would be just as simple to try to coordinate it all myself and keep the costs lower?  But, if it really is that much less stress and still doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to use, I’d be all for that.  There is definitely a LOT of information on the internet and it’s hard know if you’re really comparing apples to apples and getting the best information or the best deal.  I wonder if I could request the same agent you used?  I mean, if you were really that satisfied with her, it would be nice to know I’m assigned to someone who comes highly recommended, ya know?

I’ve travelled a fair amount (20+ countries and 4 continents) and never used a travel agent, but we are planning a DW on an alaska cruise this summer and I am SO glad we are using one. It is SO nice to have her be the person everyone contacts and asks the repetitive questions of and spends hours sorting through cabin options with.

Even yesterday, she put a hold on 5 hotel rooms for the night before our cruise. Could we have done it ourseleves? Absolutely. Was it nice to have her call, know the way to make the reservation most efficently, give them her IATA number, and be able to make future changes on the reservation as needed directly? Ohhh yes!

For us its also nice that all our travel is linked because it will help with getting all of us sitting together on board. that may not be nearly the same sort of concern for you, but it is definitely helping us keep things straight. It’s also our final payment date in about a month (yikes!) and she gets the unpleasant job of phoning everyone to remind them they need to finish up the booking/payment. I’m SO glad I’m not the one hasseling friends and family to do it.

We haven’t given a deadline to book, just suggested people do it as soon as possible as prices go up and rooms fill on our itinerary.

Good luck either way, and have an amazing trip! Istanbul is high on my list of places to go!
