I made a friend’s wedding cake once, but I would not consider doing again. It took the entire day before the wedding and was very stressful for me.  It was just a small 2-tier cake.

if I had to DIY my cake, I would make cake pops since they can be done way in advance and just buy a regular, but pretty grocery store cake for the “top.” the day before your wedding is so busy, I really think it through before you add a DIY cake to your to do list.

i think there are a lot of ways to save money on this without adding a lot of stress. Perhaps other bees can give you more advice on this.

@renwoman:  I can picture your mother screaming on the phone LOL. Yes cake/food is tough to diy since it has to be done right before the wedding. I’m DIYing a lot too, but I know the few days before I’ll be so busy setting up, picking up people at the airport, last minute seating chart changes, etc. I know I do not want to cook on those days.  We’re having a dessert bar, so I’m collecting recipes of things I can bake/make about a month in advance and freeze so it will still be good the day of.  But the grocery store is my backup in case anything goes bad.  I’ll be looking for a small bakery to do our cake.  I don’t want to spend a lot on it, but I do want one.  I’m sure you’ll be able to find one that is not a budget buster.  Just make sure you can get it delivered too 🙂
