When are your engagement pictures? You could play off what ever season it is in. we are having ours done in October in Upstate NY when the leaves change and were thinking of going to a cider mill…so we could possibly uses donuts, apples, and mugs of cider as props.

I found a heart shaped umbrella that I wanted to use in ours, but, like you, I didn’t see any shots where my photog had used props previously as well.  I emailed her the link when I bought the umbrella saying “OMG isn’t it cute!  I’d love to squeeze this in for a few of our e-pic shots!”.  I brought it along months later and she’d forgotten about it, almost seemed perplexed by it.  We went almsot the whole shoot without using it and then at the end she said “oh, did you want to do a few shots with the umbrella?”  We got a few great shots in at the end, just like I wanted.

I think the trick is to just let your photog know ahead of time.  With my prop, it was something I could send her a link to.  With something more common like baloons that’s not really an option, but maybe send your photog a few inspiration shots that you love with baloons, explain why you love them, and ask if maybe they could be incorporated in?  Something like “I realize through looking at your portfolio that this may be an unusual request, but I just love the idea of having baloons in a few shots (see attachments), do you think we could work them into a few shots?”

I think props can be really cute (unless they are on your face, I don’t get those). As far as your photographer just let them know ahead of time, it shouldn’t be a problem.

Photographers thrive on creativity. I think they would love it if you suggested it! Plus, the more creative you are, the better their shots look. 😉

We totally used props in our E-pics.  Long story short we got engaged while driving down the highway, so I thought it would be awesome to use a green highway sign in some of our E-pics.  I did most of my consulting with my photog by e-mail and about a week before the pictures I e-mailed her about it.  Mostly wanted to give her the heads up because it’s reflective.  I’d looked through her blog and hadn’t seen any pictures with props, but figured we’d make it work.  The pictures didn’t quite turn out how I had pictured in my mind, but it made for a good starting point.  Eventually our plan is to use the pictures with the blank sign and photoshop in words like “Wedding Ahead” or RSVP for some of our wedding stationary.

You can PM me if you want to see some of the pics we did with the sign.

Those umbrellas are adorable! We did a “sailor” theme shoot I guess you’d call it. We had ours done out on the water on my fiance’s boat. We had flags, balloons, hats, and a couple other things. They turned out AMAZING! It was so much fun and they are very unique photo’s now. I would just give a quick call to your photographer so she knows what to expect.
