Does anyone know a reputable place in Manhattan I can get my e-ring appraised for insurance purposes? We don’t want to with through our home renters insurance. And how much does it cost to get an e-ring appraised?

I recently used Just Appraisers (no conflict as they don’t sell rings and they provide very professional reports that top insurers use). Cost of $350.
David Wolf – the owner – was great…feel free to say Ron Shapira referred.

Does your stone come with a GIA report?
I usually go to a shop where they have a Graduate Gemologist (GG) of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).
Google it online, call them up and ask how much they charge. If it’s a simple stone it shouldn’t take more than an hour for everthing, including a typed appraisal report. Most people in NY charge about $150 per hour. Do not leave your ring with them. Watch them do it right there, so they won’t switch your stone.

@Diana R.: I found my appraiser from websites like the GIA or AGS like this: http://www.americangemsociety.org/find-an-appraiser

@Diana R.: Macys Herald Square has an appraisal department. I took my ring there. They were super professional and explained everything to me in detail. If I am not mistaken they only charge 10% of the appraisal value.

@Nycheartlondon: 10% of the appraisal value??? Thats really nuts. I would have paid them over 2500.00 for an appraisal if that were the case. Even charging 1% of the appraisal value would way too much for many rings (if the ring was appraised at 50,000 it would be a 500 dollar appraisal…which is too much in my opinion).

@Nycheartlondon: 10% of the appraisal value is crazy. That would have meant over $1,500 for an appraisal.
My Darling Husband got my ring appraised by an independent GIA diamond appraiser. He did not work at a place that sold any jewelry or diamonds, he just appraised them. I think Darling Husband paid about $100 or so for the appraisal.

@RhubarbPie: I had my ring appraised at Macy’s and I did not have a problem. The amount you pay is dependent on how much the ring is appraised. Macy’s charges $25 for value under $2500, or 1% of the total value. If your engagement ring is appraised at $50,000 then you pay $500. That may sound like a lot of money, but if you are walking around with a $50,000 ring then $500 should be a drop in the bucket.
