We didn't have thank you notes made, as we DIY'ed our invitations. We just made matching TY cards when we created the invitation suite. That way, they were ready to send out as we started to receive wedding gifts.
If it were me, I don't think I would have the extra energy to create something new with your wedding so close. I'd either wait until the wedding and send one big batch (if you were creating something individual) or just send something now and worry about doing the custom ones for the folks who gives gifts later.
If you dont want to create/order a seperate set of cards just buy some plain cards to use for anything that arrives before the wedding. Or order/make something with just your first names (what I did) for this exact purpose. You can always use stationary so you dont have to worry about having to much.
we just started sending them out when they came in. I didnt feel it was a big deal
Originally, we were going to have a picture of us holding a Thank You sign as our thank you cards, but then I realized I wouldn't get them until after the wedding and I wouldn't be able to send out any Thank You's beforehand for any gifts we received... so, we changed the direction and just went with Thank You's that match our suite.
Either way, you'll want to get those early Thank You's out of the way... nothing worse than a huge pile of Thank You's to write! I'd suggest buying simple Thank You cards for now and doing the ones you really want to do later.
we just ordered postcard thank-you notes off of vistaprint.com
We'll be sending these out for the gifts we got at the shower and others that came early. OUr wedding is at the end of September.
The postcards have one of our engagement pics on the back. We'll save on postage and it'll be a cool idea to get a personalized picture. check it out
You could just get a few packs of thank yous from like, Target and send them out. Either way, you do need to start sending thank yous now. You have 3 months to send them out, so by the time your wedding day rolls around, some of them will be late!

My FI and are getting married and have already started getting wedding gifts. We are planning to take a honeymoon or wedding picture to make our official thank yous. So of couse we won't have those to send for these early presents. And I'm not about to wait until October to send a thank you for a gift I got in July.
We decided that we need to come up with a thank you card to send for gifts we get between now and early September and anything after that we can use our official thank you cards for. Am I crazy to create extra work for us? Should we just have thank you's made now that we can use for everyone? What are you doing or did you do?
