I’m 24 and a teacher, so I have to dress somewhat professionally. I find that it’s extremely difficult to find pants that fit me well without making me look much older or younger than I am. I have trouble finding shirts that I like and that are professional looking that I can afford. Where do you guys shop for clothes on a small budget?

@dayl20: I’m 25, and a teacher as well 🙂 I teach preschool so I don’t always have to be in dressy attire, but sometimes I like to dress a bit more “teacher-esque” 🙂 I do mainly all of my shopping at TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Old Navy, and Target. Express has amazing dress pants, and they fit like a glove! They are a bit pricey, but are worth every penny! Sometimes I have found pairs at TJ Maxx and or Marshalls for a fraction of the original cost. Score!

Im a med student and have to dress professionally for anything involving a patient interaction! I like LOFT (great sales, 60% off clearance as we speak) and I also like the Limited. I love J crew and J crew factory when I get some extra money my way, which isn’t often!

@dayl20: I’m 23 and a grad student, so looking professional while spending as little as possible is important to me as well. I second TJMaxx and Marshall’s, they’re lifesavers.
One of my favorite stores to shop is Banana Republic outlet – they have 40-50% off everything sales semi-annually and you can get very nice quality blouses, sweaters, and pants for around $20 each, give or take. I actually just picked up a lovely coat yesterday for $40, regularly $120! If you have an outlet mall around you, J. Crew factory store is pretty nice but slightly more expensive than Banana, and Ann Taylor LOFT outlet has some pretty inexpensive stuff as well.
New York & Company is a mall store that sells dress pants in petites, regulars, and talls so I guarentee you’ll find pants that fit you well there and they frequently have B1G1 free sales on pants. I recommend you get on the e-mail lists of J. Crew factory, Banana Republic Factory, LOFT, and NY&C so you get alerts when they’re having big sales!

Express. Sign up for their e-mail list…they send out a ton of coupons. Usually ~$15 off every $45, and several times per year they have 40% off everything store-wide. They also sell dress pants in short, medium, and long lengths…thank god.

@dayl20: I am in my mid 20s and work in a professional environment. I have gotten TONS of compliments on my button ups from old navy (they have a super cute white one with black polka dots this season!) and dresses from Forever 21. I will buy longer length/larger cut cotton sundresses from F21. Their “Love 21” line is great and cut longer than their other dresses. I have also found cute shirtdresses at H&M for cheap.
I also will wear a combo of Forever 21 cute cardigan + decent, fitted tshirt in a complementary color from old navy under the cardigan.
Shopping J.Crew and Banana Republic’s coupons/online sales can seriously cut the cost of staple/timeless pieces, like a black wool blazer or suiting dress. I will also get one, versitile expensive piece (a black pencil skirt from JCrew) and pair it with a ton of different sweaters, tees, cardigans, button ups, etc.

Ooh one more – Kohl’s Lauren Conrad line has really sweet and feminine tops that are geared towards 20s females. Some of the stuff is a little too over the top cutesy for me (like bows all over the place) but the style overall feels conservative yet young and composed – perfect for a mid-20s teacher. If you open a Kohl’s credit card you can get significant coupons each month (usually an additional 20-30% off).

Ugh, we don’t have a J. Crew, Banana Republic, LOFT, or Express here. 🙁 I guess I could make a trip to Pittsburgh one day.
I shop in Forever21, but have to be careful with dresses from there. I’m long-waisted, so a lot of their dresses are super short on me. I’ve considered NY&C, but I haven’t been in one for years. Maybe I will check it out next time I go to the mall.

@dayl20: When I have to dress professionaly I wear things from TJ Maxx and almost any outlet I can find. We have a huge outlet mall here with Banana Republic, Gap, Ann Taylor, etc. outlets, which is so helpful. If you don’t have as many outlets you can always find great deals on sometimes unused clothing on eBay. My favorite pair of dress pants were on sale for ~$25 at H&M. They’re nice black slacks, but they’re skinny leg, so they don’t make me look older than I am, and I can wear them casually too.

I like Express’s pants but they are a bit long if you have short legs so you might need to get them hemmed if you don’t wear heels daily. I haven’t liked their shirts lately though. I used to wear Banana Republic at my old job where I had to be more dressed up but it’s too expensive for what I need now.
Most of my other clothes are from Gap.
