Are you crafty?  Sell DIY items online.  The markups on etsy are huge on some items.

Are you smart and good with words?  Sell essays to lazy college students.

Are you an IT nerd?  Design websites for people.

Like kids?  Babysitting can be a good business, just make sure you aren’t watching too many at one time.

Like dogs?  Offer your services as a dog walker or house sitter.

There is always the old standby of selling your blood products.  Do you qualify to sell your eggs?  (Are you even willing to do that?)

Do you qualify to participate in any medical studies?  Those pay lots of money here in the U.S. depending on what study you participate in.  Plus, you are potentially helping other people by testing new medications or treatments.

Okay with elderly people?  See if you can serve as a responsible person to check on elderly family members on a regular basis to make sure they are eating and taking care of themselves (you would need to report problems back to family members and maybe even to authorities if there are concerns about neglect, abuse or exploitation.)

On the etsy note, I sell vintage jewelry. As long as you can take pics, it’s a pretty easy business to get into especially since vintage is all reselling. So I’ve bought lots of vintage jewelry on etsy, seperated and photographed it and resold it one etsy. You can PM me if you want more info. (I am also living with my parents while ill and not able to work a job)

Do you have any market research companies in your area?  One of my coworkers is on the e-mail list for a firm in our area and gets selected every so often for research studies.  It’s typically companies like banks, chain restaurants or beverage companies that want you to rank thier products or sit in discussion groups about new products.  They pay like $100 per study.

I can understand your sister’s distress if the perception is that you are selling gifts to fund your life.  It’s also not a good long-term plan.

OP, what about mystery shopping?  Babysitting?  Tutoring?

Don’t buy any more DVDs.

Also, why the need to pay FI back?  You’ll be getting married and sharing money soon.

@beachbride1216:  Oh please don’t sell essays!  As a former college professor of ethics, this really bothers me.

@Jacqui90:  If you are good at selling your own stuff, what about going to garage sales and buying things to resell on ebay?

@beachbride1216:  Selling essays is plagrism and could get both the seller and buyer banned from universities instantaly.

How do I know?

Worked for Public and privite Uni’s for almost 10 years now.

@Jacqui90:  What about taking online marketing surveys?  I think those make some money, not a lot.  Google “online surveys for money” to see.

I would also let people know that you are going to tkae a hiatus on giving gifts for a while.  I just don’t think makes sense to spend money on gifts for other people if you cannot even afford to live basically.  Make them homemade cards or bake them cookies if you must.  As a poor college student, I had to declare this to everyone one year.

Also hold off on any personal purchases too (like clothes and DVDs) so you can watch that savings account grow!

@searock:  Yep but just because I say something doesn’t mean I do it.  I gave her an extensive list of anything I could think of that could assist her in making money.  Obviously, I should have thought about the essay thing longer but honestly I was trying to help her out with anything I could think of to make money and unfortunately selling essays is a business.  Do I do it?  No.  Do I think it’s ethical or a good idea?  Definitely not.  But some people need to make money and students are dumb enough to think they they can get away with it.  Thankfully there are programs that professors can use to catch students doing this.

Also, she quickly rejected that idea anyway so there was no need to rehash it and beat me up over it.
