Earrings for sensitive ears…really sensitive

I have this problem as well. I have found that wearing only earrings that are nickel free, without rhodium plating, and a minimum of 14k yellow gold or higher is okay. I have also had great luck with 925 sterling silver pieces. They are a bit more expensive to purchase, but my ears do not look disgusting which is great.

Also, I found that wearing sleeper hoops at night really helped. When I wear studs to sleep, I still end up with the red and irritated piercings.

@Laurenskii:  I have some pretty wonky metal allergies too, and painting them with clear nailpolish works for me.

I have super sensitive ears. I didn’t used to, but overnight I developed an ear-only nickle allergy.

I only use pure gold or silver studs/hoops. Acrylic studs work great for me but they need to be cleaned occasionally.

I’m right there with you! I only wear gold now and it has to be at least 14 carat and I can’t wear them overnight. My ears have expensive taste.

Myself, my mom and my sister all have the same thing.   With my sister the nickel allergy is so bad that sometimes even belt buckles or metal buttons will irritate her.

I can get away with cheap earrings for an evening, but by bedtime they are painful and have to come out and I will pay for it for a few days afterwards.

If you really must wear the cheap earrings, you can coat the stud end in vaseline.   It won’t make them perfect, but it creates a bit of a barrier between the earring hole and the metal.

Otherwise, gold is the way to go.

Yep, same here. My current every day earrings are 18kt gold. I’ve stopped looking at costume jewelry and “fun earrings” because I just can’t wear them. DH gifted me 18kt white gold diamond studs and those are literally my only earrings. Just to be on the safe side, I take them out every night before going to bed.

When I was growing up my mother always insisted that her earrings (when not precious metals) have surgical steel posts because of her sensitive ears. Earrings are labeled with this. Otherwise… yeah… precious metals (particularly high quality gold and platinum) it is.

I can only wear 14k plus gold earrings. I wear pearl stud 14k gold post earrings all day everyday. If I leave them out even while sleeping it is really hard to get them back in. I have to clean then constanty too. Side note: I got my tragus pierced and the piercing lady (at a professional shop) promised me that I wouldn’t have a problem with the surgical steel. Well, I’m allergic to surgical steel too!

@Laurenskii:  might be a Canadian term lol. Basically, it is a gold hoop that is thin and attaches back into itself to form a continuous loop. they allow the piercing to expand without running into the earring backs. I wear them at night and qhen my ears are irritated to let them calm down for a while.
