I was laying on the beach in Ocean City and didn't feel a thing. I was robbed! FI called from work to ask if I was okay since his whole building was shaking. Lots of people all around me felt it, but my girlfriend just didn't. Even my parents who are vacationing in Virginia didn't feel it. So strange
@HappilyEverAfter54: I did! I am in Maryland, in a suburb of both the District and Baltimore. My house shook, things fell, and it startled the cats. At first I thought my husband was having a seizure upstairs, but with the amount of swaying my house actually did, I knew it wasn't him. I went outside, and made it a point to actually stand on the dirt. That was actually really cool. We've had earthquakes here before, but they've been rather small. There is a fault line on the East coast that everyone seems to forget about.
When I went back inside, I ran upstairs and asked my husband if he felt it at all. He thought it was me from downstairs at first, but didn't know what to make of it. The best part of the day was when I told him to get to work, because it was news! He's a journalist. While he didn't actually *have* to be at work for several hours, when news breaks, you go with it. So I followed him around the neighborhood with his microphone, and we introduced ourselves to the neighbors before he interviewed them. We just moved in, so I felt like it was a good excuse to meet people.
All in all, it was a good day. My husband and I spent quality time together, I got to see what he does in a day's work (I do that from time to time), and I met my neighbors. Luckily the only casualty here was a cup falling off the mantle.
Now the next task is to read our insurance policy to see whether earthquake damage is covered, and to update said policy if it is not.
I'm in Pittsburgh and thought I was going crazy. I was walking to my kitchen and the floors began to shake. My fridge and stove were shaking and I heard stuff falling off of the walls. I was like WTF!? I thought the house was falling down. The funny thing is, my landlord downstairs didn't feel a thing. I was like how could you not! The whole upstairs was shaking!
I was making a presentation at work (at a farm in southern MD, 20 minutes south of DC) and said "I'm going to blow your minds" then the earthquake hit! crazy pants.
Yes, I was at work in Toms River, NJ. I live near Long Beach Island though. They say that they really felt it there.
I was standing up at the nurse's desk doing some work. Right before the earthquake occured, my heart started racing. Next thing I knew is that I felt my legs begin to shake/sway. I thought to myself "ooohh, I'm dizzy". I didn't realize what it was until everyone asked others if they felt the same thing.
I was in my office in DC - the walls shook like crazy. We got evacuated and sent home early.
I live in VA & I was asleep taking a nap when it was suppose to had hit. They are doing blasting near our apartment & it shakes like crazy when they do. So I probablly would have thought thats what it was. My home town in Pikeville, KY was hit but not hard. My mom & family lives there but she didn't feel it. On the news they said it put cracks in the srair wall or something in the court house.
@cherrydoll: I'd say you guys must think we're a bunch of wussies, but that's definitely something you wouldn't expect over on the east coast. A 5.8 anyways. I know we've had at least a 2.something in Philly not too long ago.
I'm just glad nothing serious happened here in NJ. I can't imagine if it did. I live .5 mile from Oyster Creek Power Plant.
Oh, and now I'm preparing for a Catergory 1 hurricane coming towards us over the weekend. I have an inkling that it'll die down before it hits us. Usually does, but NJ is really over due for a direct hit. The bay is about .5 miles away from me as well. I live in a great location. Hahaha.
@MissPumpkinPie: That was what I was saying... I'm not that far from 3 mile island and they said they were having some problems after the quake. I'm glad they figured everything out.
I didn't go to work today because I was running a fever this morning. I apparently slept through it! I work in a high rise, and all of my coworkers felt our building shake. Is it weird that I'm kind of sorry I missed it? haha
@HappilyEverAfter54: I'm glad to hear that they figured it out too! It's such a scary thought ever since Japan. >.<
I was talking to friends who are still in Central PA and they said it didn't feel any worse that the 3 or 4 we got the other winter (like a big truck driving by)
My family is within the 10mi evacuation zone of TMI and they didn't seem too concerned.
And from the list-serv I belong too, most of the museums in the tri-state/mid-atlantic area seem okay beyond a little shaken for what it's worth.
@MissPumpkinPie: no at all! I'm a wussie too! I was 8 when the Northridge earthquake hit, so I don't remeber much! But I think I'd rather have earthqueakes than tornados and hurricanes..
@cherrydoll: D'aw. I just wish the natural disasters would slow their role for a bit. I'm kind of tired of hearing that 2012 is going to happen. I just think that the earth is super old and crankies. It's happened before and it'll happen again. :(
@MissPumpkinPie: I definately think Mother Earth is not happy with us.. We need to respect/and appreciate her more.
Hope everyone on the East coast is safe :)
I live in Erie and I was cuddling in bed with my hubby right before he was to leave for work (2nd shift) and the bed started shaking, I told him to quit bouncing his leg because he was making the bed shake (he does it all the time) and he was like, what are you talking about? You're the one shaking the bed arent you? Then we realized the ceiling fan and the doors were rattling. It wasnt dramatic or anything, we live close to an airport and have had similar things happen when low flying planes go overhead.
I'm in North Carolina and we felt it! Our area just dealt with tornadoes last week, an earthquake (although no damage done) today, and we're set to be hit by a hurricane this weekend.
I'm in Michigan and I felt it! There was a small earthquake last year in Canada we felt, so when I felt the same sensation today I knew what it was. I was in an office building (just one story) and felt it, and my dad works on the 3rd floor and felt it too.
@nursenat: Hope the hurricane doesn't affect you guys terribly! I'm nervous about it as well.
My grandmother lives near Carlisle and she said her bedroom dresser fell over and took the mirror down with it... she lost her shelves in the dinning room too and a few of her antique dishes broke but I was more worried about her heart... She was alone and scared and couldn't get through to anyone on the phone and I couldn't reach her either... My grandfather was at work in Harrisburg and got to go home early since they had to check the buildings. I know a lot of the buildings are very old... the bulding I live in is really bad... when we get little 2.0 earthquakes our basement condo makes pops and settling sounds for a while after... I wonder what it did when we got a little more shaking this time... I need to check the crack in my bedroom before I go to bed, ugh.
I'm in B-more and felt it. My da was over helping me paint the outside windows to get it ready for lead paint inspection. I was inside he was outside on the ladder and I thought he was doing that thing where you jump the ladder over a bit, and was hitting the house. I yelled out .. DA WFT .... then the floor moved and I booked it downstairs and out the door to make sure he was ok.
He was ok. We thought maybe it was an underground gas explosion or anything ... seriously my first earthquake lol.
I hope everyone in the path of the hurricane stays safe as well.
We just had a 4.2 aftershock. How long are these supposed to happen? This is our third and it was stronger than the other two.
@Jeannine @ Small Chic: Could last between a few days to weeks. :( I'm sorry!! Please stay safe!
I was at work in Herndon/Reston, VA about 1-2 hrs away and it was crazy! I couldn't believe it the whole building was shaking. All of us in the office was like what the heck?!? I could tell right away it was an earthquake, and almost slipped under my desk right when it was stopping. Luckly it only lasted about 1-2 min's, but they are right it does feel like forever when you feel one. Right after I felt the building shake, and my computer shake then the lights blinked. NOT Fun. I called my Fiance right away b/c at 1:53pm when it happened...he's normally leaving his apartment to walk to two miles to work. He hadn't left yet and instead thought he was having a seizure (he is eplieptic). He walked out of his room at the same time his housemate came out of his room saying, "What the H*** was that...". I called a second after that and told my Fiance it was an earthquake and he told his roommate it was that...luckly they got out of the apartment too and there was no do damage but a couple crack in the walls. Forget trying to get thru on the phones.
A couple min's later my boss came by and said get off the phone we are evacutating...as the building announcement said the same.
We had to wait outside for 35 min's before we could go back in. However, from that point on I couldn't really do any work.
I live in Stafford, VA and my brother said a few things fell in the house, but they were fine. My house is about 30-45 min's from Mineral. He said our dog barked his head off like crazy before it happened, then was calm as could be during the quake. Just glad all are safe.
My best friend whom lives in Myrtle Beach, SC felt it there. Anyone in cars didn't really feel it, I had a coworker whom was driving on the road at the time. Just felt something weird. My Fiance's family in Albany, NY felt it. And his Step-brother felt it in VA Beach. Largest EVER in VA 5.8 magnatude. Just glad very minimum damage and not deaths.
Hurricane Irene is shifting some too now and that's mostly up the coast and missing VA but heading for Delaware. Praying for my friend in SC though.
At least the aftershocks are shorter. :). I got up from my desk immediately during the main quake and went to the doorway. I checked my watch and it lasted 40-45 seconds. The aftershock was about 20 seconds.
OMG three aftershocks!! I haven't really felt it up here in NOVA. Keep us posted. I can say I heard about 42 hours you can expect them to happen. Stay safe.
I just checked my facebook & alot of people that I know felt it & people who live 30 minutes away felt their house shake! I am so glad I was napping. :/
@yearns4god: I'm trying to find a house in Ocean City or West Ocean City MD but with all the hurricanes I am terrified at the thought of putting everything I have into such a risky place. We'd be living there year round not just in the summer so I guess I'll be watching this storm closely to see what I should do about my dream home.
@dorsay:LOL!
@yearns4god:Three? Wow! I only felt the first one.
I grew up in San Francisco, and have been through quakes there (including the big one in 1989), in Japan, and in Hawaii. This one felt worse even though it wasn't as strong because I was in a seismically unsound building. It was INSANE. We're on the 4th floor of a building with a first floor garage (ie not enough support for an earthquake). It was shaking like crazy for what felt like a whole minute (it was 45 seconds). Things were falling off tables and shelves; plaster was in the air. When we evacuated at the end of quake, there were cracks in the stairwell through which we could see outside.
The first aftershock was kind of hilarious; it hit when we had evacuated and were far from the building in the parking lot. We all thought we were suddendly feeling nauseous and unstable as a side effect of the earth quake. One person said so outloud and then we all realized that the ground was shaking again!
I actually have the morning off work because the building isn't "officially" sound. Hopefully we do get to go back soon--I need this job! I've only been there just under a month, so I'm not sure the job is protected in case of earthquake damage.

I missed the earthquake because we were coming back to Pennsylvania from Maryland beaches and didn't feel anything in the car. I suppose we left at the perfect time though because they looked like they were shutting down the Bay bridge to check it out and make sure it was okay just as we got off of it. I saw all over my facebook that the earthquake hit PA pretty hard near Harrisburg, enough to shake things off walls and tables (and here that's not common at all). I was just starting to get used to the tornados being new to this area and now were getting sizable earthquakes... I tried for over an hour to get a call out but all 3 of our cell phones would text and connect to the internet but you couldn't make a call at all. We sat in traffic for hours near Baltimore. Once we finally got home I checked out the weather channel and the news stations... I'm glad there was minimal damage, there was no threat of a tsunami and they seem to have the 3 power plants that were effected under control. Anyone feel it?
