I am meeting with Nolands Cakes. They are located in Pleasanton. I have heard some good things about them and they make really pretty cakes. We have a tasting in June so hopefully they are as yummy as they are pretty. Hope that helps.

Try Sweet Adeline's in Berkeley. Our 3 tier (12-9-6) lemon with lemon curd filling and REAL buttercream icing is $280. That should serve at least 70, so ~$4.0 a slice. They don't do much in terms of fancy decorations, but the cake is delicious and the icing to die for. Whens the last time you had real buttercream icing...better than Mom used to make!

We went to Noland's, and while their cakes are pretty, they charge for tasting. For someone on a smaller budget like we were, that seemed ridiculous.
I highly recommend Cake Delight in Livermore!!! We got married in Livermore and were looking for a professional, yet affordable cake on a very small budget. I found Fatema through Garre Winery's preferred vendor list (that's where we got married). I designed my own cake and she pulled it off perfectly.
Her cakes are EXTREMELY affordable (definitely in the range you're looking for, which is definitely hard to find) and she is SO sweet and easy to work with. We actually did a 2-layer cake and then a sheetcake in a different flavor to save even more money.
I have had many of her cakes since, even though we live in Lafayette, because they're just so yummy!!! On our 1-year anniversary, I had her make us a cake (didn't want to save the topper - yuck). And she even remembered our cake and decorated the anniversary one to be just like it! Be sure to try the cookies and cream one if you go there. And tell her Jackie and Nigel sent you!
