I love this idea! I'm actually trying to push myself to post more items in my etsy shop to raise money for my wedding, but I never thought about trying to sell all the other stuff filling up my closets!
Oooh, maybe a garage sale to get rid of any unnecessary clutter? Start of the marriage with a clean closet AND a little extra $$$
My FI does this too. He goes online to Craigslist and finds things that people are getting rid of and sells them on Ebay. We just sold some unopened computer accessories and ink toners and have made over $500 in the past couple weeks.
If you have the time and energy to invest it is definitely a worthwhile thing to do.

I wrote about this in another thread, but I thought I would make a separate topic about it because it is something that has really helped me out and I hope other people could use the idea, too. To raise money to purchase some smaller items for the wedding, I had an eBay selling "fundraiser" during which I sold a bunch of my lightly worn clothes and accessories online.
When I had a couple of days off of work, I cleaned out my closet of everything in-season that I no longer wore. I spent a few hours taking photos, measurements, and writting descriptions for ebay listings. I started all of my items at .99 to avoid insertion fees (you can't avoid post-sale and PayPal fees, though), and chose to try to profit more by volume of items than on high-ticket items...I had a lot of stuff to get rid of! To ship, I got free priority mailing supplies from the postal service, printed off the postage from my home printer, and dropped the paid packages in the box at the post office lobby.
I "raised" about $850 total (so far!) and decided to leave it in my PayPal account to avoid it getting absorbed into my everyday spending. I have used that money to pay for wedding things with PayPal--shipping for our STD postcards from VistaPrint, a veil from eBay, and jewelry and accessories from Etsy." It has been really helpful for the little wedding things that add up.
Just wanted to share the idea because it has worked really well for us and I hope some of you could use it too!
