so i found a great deal on a brand new melissa sweet dress. (i need another dress like i need a hole in the head. this will be dress #5. my dress is already with the seamstress getting altered.)
so i decide to buy the dress because i think wearing 3 dresses for a wedding is perfectly normal. i pay very promptly on friday, feb 24. the seller states that they ship within 2 business days. they didn’t ship until wednesday, feb 29. so fine. i know life happens. i calculated shipping time and it should have gotten here today.
i contacted the seller and s/he says they shipped parcel post because the dress did not fit into a medium flat rate usps box. this person sells several wedding dresses so they’re not new to this. the last time i checked a wedding dress does not fit into a medium flat rate box. i know because i’ve sold and mailed two wedding dresses. s/he then tells me that it actually cost them more than i paid to use parcel post. i estimated parcel post and it should only be about $11. s/he says they had to pay for a box and pay ebay shipping fees bringing it to more than the $26.66 i paid and that basically i should be grateful that they didn’t ask me to pay them more money.
the estimated delivery date was feb 29 to march 1. they didn’t ship until feb. 29. i emailed the seller and said i was not happy because 1) they did not ship within the estimated “handling” period and 2) they downgraded to slower shipping without notifying me.
when i sell an item, i promptly go to the post office and if there’s any delay on my part, i upgrade them to a faster shipping method and eat the cost. i’m also very careful about shipping estimates — i get a box ready and i weigh it. if i miscalculate, i honor the price i quoted and eat the difference. i told the seller that i would have appreciated them contacting me and offering me the option to pay more, accept the slower shipping method, or to cancel the order. in my book, the seller changed the terms of the sale without notifying me.
am i being too tough on the seller or am i justified? i guess to me, if i make a mistake, i eat the costs to make it right instead of just covering it up and hoping the other person doesn’t notice.
