@MadameX:  Congrats! That is exciting.

I didn’t think you made yourselves sound destitute. You sounded just like any other couple on here having to save up for what has become an expensive thing. 🙂

@MadameX:  That is awesome! It sounds like you guys are being very practical and responsible.

My SO and I recently had a similar conversation. He asked if we should just set a date a reasonable distance in the future and go with it. “I’ll get you a ring sometime before then” was his oh-so-romantic suggestion. 🙂 I kinda like the idea. We’re looking at 1.5-2 years as well and my thought is, we’ll save up and as we get closer know if our budget is going to allow us to have a fancy sit-down reception with a string quartet or a BBQ in a public park… but either way, we’re getting married on our date! LOL We need to have a follow up conversation but I think this will be the plan.

@MadameX:  I love the idea of a mangagement ring! Would he replace it with a wedding band or wear it on the other hand after the wedding?

@MadameX:  I agree with you on the mangagement ring thing and feeling less like you’re labeled as a result. I don’t have anything against couples who choose not to do this either, but for me it’s an enticing idea because it makes the whole thing more equal–we’re both labeled as “taken.”

My guy isn’t really into jewelry, so I doubt he’ll want a mangagement band (haven’t talked to this about him yet either), but I have thought that giving him one in a material that the wedding ring wouldn’t be made of would be really cool.

I was thinking about what would fit his personality and I think wood would do the trick, especially if I was able to make it myself, however I worry about the finish, which wears off over time with hand washing. You’re not suppposed to wear wooden rings while washing hands, they’re not that durable. Guess there’s a reason people use metals for these things. Still, I like the idea of wood.
