I’m twenty one weeks pregnant today and I weigh myself weekly to check weight gain progress. I’ve been a steady increase of about a pound a week until this week when I got on the scale and gained 5 pounds! With this jump I am at 21 pounds gained during my pregnancy. I know rationally my doctor is not worried (or wasn’t at the last appointment) and my baby is growing and healthy, but I still can’t help but to feel “eeek!” Can anyone relate?

Get rid of the scale! I was weighing myself everyday and driving myself crazy.
I was reading all the books about how much I should be gaining and trying to compare myself. I am only 12w 4d and have gained 8 pounds. My boobs have gone up 2 sizes and I have a noticeable bump. I have no gained weight anyplace else and my doctor is very pleased with my progress and is not at all worried about my weight. I started to think of what I was eating too and came to the conclusion that weight gain or no weight gain I do not have bad eating habits and am eating what I need and the baby needs.

I’m not pregnant and have never been, but can’t some of the weight gain be attributed to retention of water? Just a thought.

Five pounds in a week could be ANYTHING-water retention, constipation, a few big meals….gaining 26 pounds in 21 weeks is a bit on the high scale but if your hormones are anything like mine, I can definitely relate to that frustration of stepping on the scale and seeing it jump like that! I gained 80 lbs with both my boys and 40 lbs with my daughter.
The weight allll came off. BUT, I would sit there in the docs office crying, swearing to jeebus I wasn’t eating crazy…it seemed everything I put in my mouth just went to my hips and I wasn’t burning any calories, which is crazy…but it felt like that! I had edema, and turns out a lot of the weight (15 lbs or so) was WATER!!!
When I gave birth to my son, I lost 30 lbs in one week. If 8 was the baby, 1 the placenta, and a few here and there for everything else, the rest was fluid retention.
Just eat healthy, walk a lot and don’t worry 🙂 Even if you end up gaining 50 lbs it will come off and most likely, this is just a normal fluctuation 🙂

Thank you everyone for the reassurance! I try to eat healthy with a variety of different foods at each meal but of course I have my weaknesses for pasta and chocolate. My husband and I try to walk everyday together so I have been trying to keep active as I can between work. But I think a lot of it was pre-pregnancy I was very athletic and did high intensity workouts 4-5 times a week. Obviously I can’t maintain that same workout schedule while pregnant! Luckily I’m all belly and the rest of me looks pretty much the same. I’ve also seen a few friends recently I haven’t seen in awhile and they were like “woah you’re big!” when they saw my belly so I guess I’m a little sensitive about that too 🙂 Thank you everyone 🙂

Honestly, I wouldn’t worry about the weight gain one bit. Last week, I had my 21 week appointment and lost weight. It’s been up and down since getting pregnant. Mr. Jellybaby is growing on schedule, so I’m not too concerned. Someone else on another board only gained 5 lbs her entire pregnancy and still had a healthy baby girl. Right now for me, I feel like I eat and eat and still don’t gain which has never happened to me ever until now. I’m supposed to gain a lot of weight in the next 4 weeks from 22 weeks to 28 weeks. I’ll be curious to see if that happens. Getting weighed at the doctor is such a surprise each time since it goes up and down lately.
