So…. since the tech at the NT scan told us she thought we were team blue, we’ve been dying for some confirmation. My doctor won’t do the anatomy scan until after 20 weeks so (I’m 14 1/2 now) I’ve got a ways to wait! I was thinking today that maybe we should do an elective scan. There is a place here that does them starting at 16 weeks. Anyone have experience with this? How did yours go?

How accurate are they at 16 weeks? I had read that scans aren’t very accurate until at least 18 weeks, preferably 20 weeks. I had mine at 20 weeks 2 days. And the NT scans I’ve read are just way too early to be accurate. I personally would wait until the 20 weeks. Why does your OB say you have to wait until after 20? How long after? Like 21 weeks or so? I think 19-20 weeks would be just fine. If you want the elective, go for it, but still take it with a grain of salt until your anatomy scan at 20 or later. My two cents!

I think if they see a pee pee then chances are it’s a boy but its still so early to tell for sure. i’ve heard so many stories about people thinking its a girl around 14-16 weeks only to find out its a boy later on in the 20 week scan or visa versa. I think they say after 16 weeks you have a pretty good chance of getting it right but up until then boy and girl parts look so similar its hard to tell sometimes. If you can stand it i’d wait a few more weeks and then do elective if you can’t wait until 20. We had our gender scan at 19 weeks.

i found out at 14weeks that we were having a girl via elective scan and it was pretty obvious for us! it was confirmed at 19weeks at our anatomy scan.

If you can handle waiting, I would save my money and get a 3d ultrasound around 30 weeks. It was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had!

Thanks everyone. I found a place that is very affordable so we may end up doing both one earlier and a 3d one later 🙂 I made an appointment for 17 weeks. They already thought they saw a “pee pee” at 13 weeks so hopefully it will just be confirmation and they’ll see what they need to! If not, at least I will have gotten to see the little peanut again and we’ll wait until 21/22 weeks for the anatomy scan.

We did the elective scan at 16 weeks and it was obvious it was the girl. No problem at all. My anatomy scan at 20 weeks confirmed it. We also did 2 elective 3D ultrasounds later in the pregnancy (27 weeks and 32 weeks). So, I say go for it and enjoy the elective ultrasound!!

I do ultrasound. I would wait until your anatomy scan for 2 reasons:
1) The “goods” may not be obvious as it is common for boys to have little boy pary so they look like a girl and for girls to have a larger girl part so it looks like a boy part until after 18-22 weeks.
2) The bigger reason: If the sonologist god forbid, sees an abnormality, they can not tell you. And if it is something obvious and you notice it and they as they still can’t tell you and then you have to still wait for your anatomy scan while worrying.
I try to take a “safe” standpoint in my clinical setting and would never want to compromise the patient’s frame of mind nor risk the change of encountering a problem or worse having the patient encounter one I can’t comment on.

NT also thought they saw boy parts at our NT scan.
Elective Scan confirmed boy at 16 weeks.
Anatomy Scan confirmed boy at 21 weeks.

@TravelingBrit: 🙂 Great! I didnt originally care whether it was aboy or girl but now that I think it’s a boy, I kind of want it to stay that way!!

@TravelingBrit: Also, are you British and thus your screen name? I think it’s funny that I spelled traveling/travelling the British way and you spelled it the American way. 😉 (I am from Texas)
