I do know that if you want to be legally married, it is a pain to do it in Mexico. There are blood tests and a 3 business day waiting period for starters. Then I heard it could take 4-6 weeks to get your marriage certificate. Not worth the hassle if you can have a quickie courthouse wedding at home. Then you can enjoy Mexico as a honeymoon without the legal hassle.

If I were you – I would hire a travel agent. He or she will be able to talk directly to the resorts and get you exactly what you need!

We vacationed in Playa del Carmen in June and wanted to elope while there, but the “rules” set up were such a pain! Good luck, I hope it works out for you! 🙂

We are getting married in the rivera maya but it wont be a legal ceremony. (so no blood test or waiting). After we get back from our weddingmoon, the next monday im planning we will go to the courthouse to sign papers. seems much easier to do it that way

I agree with the others—getting legally married in Mexico requires a lot of hoops to jump through. You could always get married at the courthouse at home and then do a symbolic ceremony in Mexico or just go there for your honeymoon. Karla Casillas is in Cabo San Lucas and is a great planner. She was also the person that translated for the judge that my clients used, since the judge didn’t speak english for the ceremony. You typically need to book well in advance in certain areas, as there are usually only a certain amount of judges that do legal ceremonies there. We booked a judge 11 months in advance in Cabo to make sure that my clients could have a legal wedding there. Or maybe pick an all-inclusive hotel to help you out. Whatever you decide to do, have a great time and congrats!
