@indigop:  That’s so sweet!  Is it important that it’s handmade?  Are you going to be asking her for input, or making the decision totally yourself?  Any more details about the style you want?

@indigop:  I had a ring custom made by a local artist here. If you’d e interested in working with someone over distance, I can give you the info?  I have pics but not on my iPad.  I’ll post it later.

@indigop:  Emeralds are beautiful but their cleavage leaves them easy to fracture and not the best for everyday wear. To add to this most natural emeralds have a lot of inclusions/fractures that make them even more fragile. If you want green there are a number of alternatives. Have you considered a green sapphire? It wont be the same color as an emerald but it will hold up better. Other options include an alexandrite which changes color, or a green moissanite. Tourmalines are also relatively fragile stones like emeralds so not the best for daily lifetime wear. A few places to consider looking:

@indigop:  Green diamonds can be had but they are expensive when natural. Krikawa has the ability to source irradiated ones. My ring was done by them and they are working on a release of a vintage/antique style line for later this year. The photos I’ve seen are absolutely gorgeous of the pieces they’ve made/sold so far. I’m very active we went sapphire due to that and I like color. Watch out for settings with a lot of pave and high settings if she is active. A little pave that is well set shouldnt be a huge issue.

@indigop:  My fiance purchased me a 2.75ct emerald engagement ring.  The setting is really importnat when picking an emerald because you don’t want to leave edges exposed on a ring meant for everyday use.  We went with a bezel setting and I haven’t had any issues, and I’m hard on my ring.  Check out some estate jewelry shops for great settings.

Here’s my ring:
