Dear lovely bees,
Oh my God, I am so excited! I got engaged this past Sunday on January 22, 2012! Yay! I am #186 in this week's list, move one up! All the waiting ladies, I'll tell my story so you'll find some consolation. Sigh no more, because your time will come too! It's a bit long with the details, sorry:/
Some of you will remember me from my ultimately pessimistic posts. I was utterly frustrated, super disappointed, and was getting ready to move on with my life: http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/how-long-more-to-wait
Apparently all these emotions made me distant from my SO (my trip to Texas, not calling him often etc). When he realized something was wrong, we sat down and talked about everything. His main concern in delaying our engagement was financial and he asked me if it'd be alright he gave me his mother's ring. When I said I'd love it, I knew it was about to happen soon.
For days after this, he kept saying to me that he has a present for me that will surprize me a lot, and yet ended up giving me nothing. My roller-coaster feelings started again. Sometimes he made remarks as if he wasn't in love with me enough, and I should wait for him to be even more in love! Kinda drove me crazy a couple of days. I even started looking to meet other men, and went to a networking event. After the event, I met my SO for dinner. He found me very beautiful that night and asked me if I was trying to get a new boyfriend in parties (because I was exceptionally beautiful!). I just smiled and said nothing :)
On Saturday night we were going dancing. At some point in his car, he asked me to reach for his backpack. I got the backpack from the rear seat, and he said there is a box for me in it. I found the box, and he asked me to open it. I was thinking like "Oh my God, is he going to propose while driving???" But yet, I went ahead and opened it, and guess what, it was an I-Pod! Yes, that device for listening to music :) Mine was broken for a while, he knew it, and got me a new one. Well, I had mixed feelings. On the one hand, yes something I need, how thoughtful of him. On the other hand, WTF??? I am expecting the ring!!!
Well, I went to bed with mixed feelings, but just thanked him for his present. On Sunday, we decided to go to brunch. We went to a diner that we hadn't been for a while, seated at a nice table by the bay. I took of my jacket etc, and he took of his, and then he took his gloves, and took something out of his finger. It was the ring! He gave it to me and said "It's yours." I was really surprized, and asked "Really?" And he said, "Yes, as I promised. Until I get you yours one day!" Wow! It was really short and sweet. I asked him, "so you're asking me to marry you?" He said, "Of course, and the minute you put the ring on your finger you said yes" :)
Yes, here's my story ladies. Happy ending (or beginning!) after a few months of roller-coasted feeling. But I must tell you, this really made me so happy! It is so right. All those roller-coaster of emotions disappear in a second when this happens. His parents are not alive, and mine live overseas. Tomorrow we'll call my family and friends to announce our engagement :) I can't wait!
Here's a picture of my ring. It is called an emerald cut and considered a classic piece. In fact, I liked the classy look of it so much that I don't want another one in the future. We had it cleaned and got a ring-guard since it was a little big for my finger. I love it! I hope my story is inspirational to some. I don't think this would've happened without openly talking to my SO and actually playing a little games :) And the period of waiting wouldn't have been easy if there weren't Bees like you that shared your stories and gave me ideas. Thanks to all Bee members, and have a wonderful year ahead!
Best,
SpringNYC

Oh, let me do what others did about the timeline:
Relationship start date: 11/26/2010
(He knew I wasn't going to date him if he wouldn't be ready for marriage in a year.)
Engagement date: 1/22/2012
Considered wedding date: 4/15/2012
(I know a little too soon for the wedding, but it needs to be around this time because of familial reasons and time limitations. Oh I already bought the dress, the same day we got engaged. Just some meer luck!)

Um. That ring is GORGEOUS! My mom's ring was totally not my style.... You are so lucky! I hope your FI (eep!) realizes just because he didn't buy it for you doesn't mean it's not super lovely and from a place of love. Though, I gotta ask... any specs?
@love108: Thank you! Yes, I really think I am lucky about this ring.
Any specs? Well, I don't doubt his love for me, because he didn't risk losing me. He knew I was about getting ready to move on. He was financially concerned, and I also know he is too shy, he didn't even bend on one knee. And yet, he still surprized me :) Also I guess he wouldn't give me his mother's ring if he didn't love me.
What a beautiful ring! I'm really a sucker for family gemstones. Congratulations, and thanks for the words of encouragement.
Wow congratuations! That ring is very similar to something we are having made... good choice :)
Congrats on your engagement! Your ring is beautiful and I can understand why you wouldn't want to consider an upgrade one day.
Oh my !! That is a beautiful timeless ring ! Have fun planning :) I wanna se your dress !! :)
Congrats on the engagement! I just wanted to chime in because your ring is similar to mine, which was also a family heirloom. Mine doesn't have the side stones, but a similar design in the white gold, (Sorry for the seriously swollen fingers -- it doesn't normally look like that!) Anyway, I wear mine with the band that was designed to go with it and a separate wedding band. Yay semi-ring twin!
Congrats! That ring has a very classic and elegant look to it, it's very beautiful.
Congratulations! Lucky you, an engagement AND an iPod. ;)
@love108: Haha, silly me :)
Yes, the ring is apparently an emerald cut. The jeweler said it is around 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 carat range. In its days, it must've been worth about $3000. Since now it's a classic, it must be worth around $6000-$7000. Now it kind of makes me worried to wear it outside actually, living in NYC and everything :)
@hosannac: Wow, your ring looks so gorgeous too. I wasn't able to get as clear a shot of mine on my finger as yours. Now that I see yours, I have a clearer idea about a wedding band that could go with it. We actually looked at some wedding bands, but didn't quite like anything so far. Thanks for your feedback and the twin ring sharing! :)
Dear @windcriesamy: Thank you so much! No worries, you'll get there soon too!
Dear @Olive12: @emmylouloubobells: @Novella: @AubByAub: @Nicoley1985: @sugarpea:
@Dandelion D: @DaisyDreamer: Thank you so much!
Dear @maudemaisha: Thank you! The dress is from Social Apparel. Since we're planning a very small ceremony, we didn't want a super big wedding gown. I just found the dress on a website now, unfortunately it doesn't show the back of the dress. Much of its beauty is on the back; it has a corset, and looks so nice. Mine is of course white and I'll keep the hem a little longer. You can see it here:

Dear @sillie: @butterflylove: @RedBear: @asscherlover: @Tarheelgurl: @lizzyflitz: Thank you so much!
Dear @BayStateBride: Thank you! Yes, I-pod WAS the real surprize :)
I'm so glad that everything came together in the end for you and your SO (now FI!). Congratulations!!! And, as others have pointed out, it really is a beautiful ring :)
Almost 1.5 carats! I cannot imagine being that lucky :) It's probably worth more than 6k! You should get it appraised so it can be insured!!
I'm so happy for you! Congratulations!!! And the ring is absolutely stunning and breathtaking!! Are you going to have it resized for your finger? I'm just asking because some guards can fall off and I'd hate for your ring to be in danger of getting lost...
Dear @desertgirl: @Ambergris: @Vegan: @love108: @CupcakeLove @mmmk @ChicChick: @mnp: : Thank you so much for your good wishes! I am so glad that you liked the ring. I'm loving it each and every day! I wouldn't believe in sayings like 'Diamonds are a girl's best friend,' but I kind of do now. The hard part now is planning our super-small wedding on a budget. I'm already getting ideas from the wedding-related blogs here. Despite the difficulty of it, it is a really enjoyable period of my life. I wish all of you who are waiting, you will get there soon too. Thanks to all once again! SpringNYC
@squeak: Dear Squeak, thanks so much for your good wishes and the tip. Actually even with the ring guard, it was a little loose, so we ended up doing a little wrap around it. We are going to have the ring resized, but we have trust issues. We heard horror stories regarding jewelers replacing the stone, but we'll eventually do it. SpringNYC
OHHHHH, just read your story :) Congratulations. See, everything happens for a reason and in it's time :D yayy
