I am so thrilled to say that I am officially engaged to the man of my dreams, after almost 20 years of knowing that he was “the one!” We have a lot of history, so I will try to keep this brief and get to the pics!
I met my fiance Doug nearly 20 years ago, when he was the librarian’s assistant at our elementary school in Maryland. He is my life long best friend Sally’s brother, and in the days before the Backstreet Boys, I felt as if Doug was the only bowl cut haircuted boy in the world for me! He was older and Sally was uncomfortable with my crush, and Doug thought I was Sally’s dorky friend, so time went on for the next several years.
In high school, with hormones running amok, I decided that the only person appropriate to be “my first” was Doug. By this point, my physical self had matured enough that Doug took notice, so in secret, we solidified our relationship! It was terrible!!! I didn’t want him to know it was my first time, and he was trying to impress me as the “older guy”… needless to say, we were not yet compatible!!! We broke things off, and for many years went our seperate ways.
Three years ago, over cocktails with Sally, and tearful rememberances of relationships past, I told Sally that I thought the only man I ever loved was Doug. With the years and tears behind us, Sally gave me her blessing for the prospective relationship, and I called Doug once again. To make a long story a bit shorter, things worked out, we live in NYC together happily, and last Friday night, the man of my dreams and I became engaged to be wed.
After dinner at one of our favorite spots, Edgar Cafe on the Upper West Side, we took a stroll through Central Park to walk home. In the streetlight, all alone, he told me he had to tie his shoe, and asked me if i could see the Central Park Boathouse from where we were standing. As i was looking around, he got down on one knee, and asked me if I would “Spend the next few months talking to him about weddings nonstop, and at the end, do him the honor of becoming his wife.” I MEAN… Could it get any better!!!???
Yes! It turns out it could! Doug secretly met with my mother and his mother, and had a ring made for me, using the center stone from my grandmother’s engagement ring, and side stones from his mom’s 10th anniversary band, making an entirely new and perfect ring, just for me. I wanted yellow gold with white gold prongs, and that is what my man made sure I got! Without further ado, my incredible ring, and the flowers sent to my from the restaurant I manage, as congratulations. I know this saying is overused, but I am OVER THE MOON!!!
