My Fiance isn’t necessarily a romantic guy, and since I knew that the proposal would be coming soon (I helped design the ring and pick the stone) I wasn’t expecting him to surprise me. I’m a hard person to surprise and we’re a low-key couple so I assumed we would go out for dinner or it would happen one night while making dinner at home together.
Instead, he had one of his co-workers message me on Facebook and tell me that the party they were throwing on the Friday had moved to another venue. I’m used to his friends letting me know what the plans are because he’s not great at answering texts so I didn’t suspect anything. She also said that their friend would be playing the piano at the gardens before the party so we should stop by and hear him play. Last time he played for everyone I was late, missed it, and was bummed because he’s a really good pianist and everyone was telling me how great it was.
I mentioned the change of plans to my Fiance and he reminded me that we should definitely be on time so we wouldn’t miss the performance. While we were getting ready my Fiance was acting kind of weird and almost grumpy. I told him that we didn’t have to go out if he was tired, esp. since we were going to a party Saturday night as well. He said that we should just stop by and grab and drink at least and I agreed. I didn’t realize he was just nervous about proposing.
We arrived at the gardens which are on the top floor of an office tower and are covered in living walls with trees and paths and koi ponds. However, they were closed and roped off. My Fiance suggested that we just step over the ropes and it would probably be fine. We walked past some garden employees who all ignored us and way at the back of the gardens I could see his friend sitting at the grand piano by a Koi pond already playing. We sat down and my Fiance turned to me and said “Nobody else is coming”. I hadn’t clued into what was happening so I just nodded and was like “it’s weird that nobody else showed up!” But then he said “the last few years have been the best years of my life” and got on one knee and I cried my makeup off.
Then we sat and listened to the piano playing which was a medley of a bunch of my favorite songs. My Fiance and his friend had put it together a few weeks ago and he had been practicing ever since. I cried through the whole performance because I was so surprised and couldn’t believe that they had worked together to make it so special.
I learned later that my Fiance had to contact all of the garden staff and security and bring them coffee and doughnuts and convince them to ignore us in the gardens since we would be there after it had closed. He jumped through a bunch of hoops to get permission to use the piano and ensure that nobody would interrupt us.
We went for dinner afterwards at the place we had a first date and the chef sent out a bottle of really nice champagne and came out to congratulate us. It was so sweet and special that I told my Fiance that I didn’t even need a wedding, the proposal was a good enough memory (he wants a wedding though, so we will be planning for next year).
It’s a 2 carat light blue natural sapphire (sapphires are denser than diamonds so it’s approximate the size of a one carat diamond). Precision cut with no heat or other treatments and a really high clarity. It changes depending on the lighting from a light silvery blue to a periwinkle colour and has a lot of sparkle. There are no filters on the photos; it just looks different in different lightings..I keep staring at it!
