We did! We did our engagement session in Washington, DC with a Groupon (awesome value!!!). We loved it and were so glad we did it. Then our wedding photography package also came with an engagement session. We were only in our wedding city once before the week of our wedding after choosing the venue, and unfortunately, it stormed really badly during what was supposed to be our second engagement session. So, we had a “week of wedding session,” just for fun. It was awesome! We had pics with our wedding bands on and our “Mr & Mrs” t-shirts. It was so much fun! Our photog was even so awesome that she quickly edited a few of the best so we could use them at our wedding (we had fog screens with pictures).

We will be having our engagement photos in NYC while our wedding will be in southern MA, with the same photographer. I found her on a craigslist listing indicating that she shoots in both locations. Her reason being that she livings in NY but her BF is in Boston and she comes up whenever she isn’t shooting a wedding.

We could have done the engagement pics in Boston but we think it will be fun to have them in NYC!

I will have 2 different photographers.  I am doing a different one here  at home (midwest) for engagement photos because she was very highly rated by friends and family. I couldn’t really afford, nor did I want to, fly a photographer out to Hawaii for my DW. So, I went with a different photographer for the wedding, a family friend who is also a professional photographer in HI.

I may use the engagement photographer for a “special event” photography for my at-home “reception” next spring (with ~150 guests.)

Though I loveeee photography, especially fancy photojournal type photography that’s so popular with weddings, I’m not going to be upset if my wedding pictures aren’t super awesome. I am sure they will be great, even though I’ve never had a session with my photographer before the day of the wedding. I’m also having a videographer for the ceremony – I’m sure I’ll have enough memories captured on the day of my wedding 🙂

@kcanon:  With the Groupon, it was from $60 for 1.5 hours. We did, however, spend $200 to get the rights to all the photos– they were that good, so we didn’t mind. I honestly think engagement photos are worth it. I would have paid full price if I had had to (I think she charges around $300 for a session).
