I have heard of several customs around the world especially Europe and I am very interested in the engagement ring custom and the wedding ring custom too. From what I understand in places like the Netherlands the prospective groom presents the prospective bride with a uniquely engraved/designed band when he asks for her hand in marriage, these bands are purchased in sets for both the bride and groom.
I am from South Africa and our traditions are pretty much the same as in the USA (from what I have read), engagement ring for the bride – the bigger the better and a wedding band for the bride and groom, these rings are worn on the left ring finger.
I would love to know from all the Beez what the different traditions are in your country of origin. I find it fascinating!
I am not really into the big bling type engagement ring and would be happy with a stonless ring, or some very small art deco gemstone ring, or just a unique band maybe.
Thank you for sharing in advance! This should be interesting!

In Sweden it is very common that both the bride and groom have a wedding ring looking engagement ring (so eternity band or just plain metal or plain metal with engravings) and then the bride gets a wedding ring which looks more like the traditional American engagement ring.

In Latvia and, as far as I’m concerned, other Baltic countries engagement rings are not as big deal as in U.S. In most cases there are cheaper stones than diamonds (I have never heard of anyone saving several montly incomes for a ring – it would be considered crazy!), and there is no much fuss about ring when somebody announces engagement. Wedding bands are traditionally plain gold, sometimes with engravings, sometimes with small diamonds or other stones (but with very low setting). Silver bands are popular in some circles too, usually if couple chooses to have ring with national ornaments or replicas of archaeological findings. Rings are worn on right hand (recently there is increase of wearing them on left hand, due to influence from Western countries), engagement ring often is worn on left hand after wedding, sometimes together with wedding band too.
We have silver bands with national ornaments which symbolise wealth and fertility.
