When I was little I always saw the newspaper announcements and couldn't wait for mine to be in there... but it never even ocurred to us at the time to do it. I think it's sweet but not necessary... if you want to and can afford it then go for it!
To ask if it's worth it you should ask your motivations. Do you want everyone to know about it? then yes it's worth it cause that's what will happen. If you want your grandma to know, a paper announcement might be too much, lol.
Either way if your parents want to announce it what's there for you to lose?
I could care less but my mom was excited about it so I told her to go for it. :P
I also have relatives overseas in the States and we send them copies of everything, so it would be nice to be able to send them a copy of an engagement announcement, and I would love to be able to show my kids one day the announcement :) maybe cos i am so traditional lol
We didn't...I think facebook has taken place of the newspaper announcement, haha.
We did but only because I look at the announcements every week and I was excited to have my own in there. My MIL put our engagement announcement in their newspaper and my mom will put our wedding one in hers (they live about a half hour apart and get different local papers). I didn't really see the point in having 2 announcements in the seperate papers especially when they're like $100+ to begin with.
None of my friends did announcements though, so it really just depends on what you want. Most announcements I've seen have been the parents announcing their daughter/sons engagement so if it's something that they want, I think you should let them do it. There's really no harm in it.
I am having a hard time with my enagement annoucement? any suggestions??
Mine was:
(My parents names) of (Suburb) are delighted to announce the engagement of their daughter, Jacqui, to Ethan, son of (my FI's parents names) of (Suburb).
It was very simple and to the point, I knew they were going to put one in eventually, but I only found out the day it was on because my Dad's old boss (who I met several times) called with congratulations, mum hadn't told me she had contacted the newspaper with it yet lol
I think there are wedding timelines online that include the approx months to put an engagement announcement in a newspaper. I personally love it because it's somewhat old fashioned.
I want to do it in the newspaper where we grew up, especially since we have a lot of friends and people that still live around that area. When we do our announcement, I'm going to clip ours out and put it in our scrapbook :)

Is a newspaper announcement of an engagement too old fashioned? When I called my parents after my fiance proposed my dad asked if I wanted them to put in a newspaper announcement. I said no, thinking it was pointless with a super long engagement. Yesterday my mum asked again and I am considering it. Is it worth doing?
