I just got engaged on Friday, and am wondering what to do about engagement announcements. I have always wanted to take engagement pictures because I think it’s a wonderful way to capture the excitement that comes with that time in your life as a couple. That being said, we don’t have a LOT of money, so we were wondering if we even should do that at all, or wait and include a little “We’re engaged” note on our Christmas cards (the nice ones with pictures).
OR would it make people angry that they are getting a “We’re engaged” note six months later?
We don’t really know what to do. Either way I would really like to take engagement pictures, but if we don’t do announcements, we can wait a few months to do them.
What did/would you do?

You can always send out a cute postcard. Send out engagment photos. Sometimes wedding photographers will do package deals and shoot both your engagement and wedding photo. If you’re not getting married right away you can always just use a cute picture that already exists and print something up.

@SaraWoof: First of all, CONGRATS!!! 🙂
You’re right, being engaged is a very exciting time for you two as a couple and for your families as well. I always stress the importance and practicality of having an engagement photo session, so I definitely suggest going ahead and doing it.
For starters, you will eventually want to capture on film all this joy and this big milestone in your relationship. But, most importantly, you need an engagement session to help you get to know your wedding photograpger and vice-versa. This will ensure fantastic photos on the Big Day!
I remember my husband Luke and my engagement photo session (which was held about five months before our wedding date). And man, was it awkward! I mean, besides models and celebrities, who is used to photographers following them around, posing them, and taking photos for hours on end? I know I sure wasn’t! I was so nervous (but thankfully that did NOT show up in the photos). What I’m trying to say is, having an engagement session with the SAME photographer who will be doing your wedding is crucial. You will learn about their style. They’ll learn about yours as a couple. You will also become comfortable in front of a camera and that is very important for your Big Day.
It’s ultimately up to you two (and your wallets), but I say go for it! It’s special. It’s fun. It’s important. 🙂 And like @ScienceGeekgirl: said, lots of photographers now-a-days include the engagement photo session in the cost of their services, so why not?
Hope this helps!
