@Hopeful1: I made it a long time ago. It's really just a roast chicken...so its not much different than the dinners I normally cook!
I hope it works for you :)
I have heard of Glamour's engagement chicken and I did at one point consider making it for my boyfriend. He found the recipe however and told me I should get on it because he was going to propose soon. I decided against it to see what happened. I don't think there is any direct correlation between engagement chicken and getting engaged though. I think an engagement happens because it was meant to happen.
@Hopeful1: HEH. I was reading an issue of Glamour yesterday at the beach with BluesGuy (he likes to read, well, anything), and they had a section on recipes that would change your life. Engagement Chicken was one of them -- I flipped past it, though, because I didn't want him to think I was getting ideas!
I can't say that I'd ever make this specific recipe for him. One of the first meals I cooked for him was a roast chicken with lemon, and I hadn't even *heard* what was in Engagement Chicken at that point. That's one of the main "Sunday dinner" pieces in my repetoire, and I don't want him to get any ideas that I'm doing chicken and lemon just so that he'll propose!
@Hopeful1: No great insight into the chicken (never made it, but I've made other roast chickens), but I just wanted to say it's been 7 years for me too! Sigh. Somehow day to day it doesn't seem that long but then you say the words out loud and you're like SEVEN?!
never made it but im sure that if i had known about it when i was waiting, i would have. i would hav done anything.
I've definitely heard of Engagement Chicken but have yet to try it! Hope if works for you! :)
@Bostongrl25: seriously do I give head? Yes. seriously did he propose because he got head? Of course not. It's a joke. So is "engagement chicken."
@Hopeful1: I made this chicken the week after Valentine's Day (Feb. 17th-ish) and he bought my engagement ring May 17th. Still waiting for the ring/proposal, but I KNOW it's coming soon! Haha
DISCLAIMER: I realize that there is no direct correlation between CHICKEN and ENGAGEMENT! This post was intended to be light hearted and like I said at the end of my orignial post I would put Engagement Chicken in the category of old wives tale. No one on here has NEVER done anything because they thought it would bring them luck?! GEEZ!
Thanks to those who got what I was trying to get across.
I made it for Valentines Day 2010, and he proposed less than a month later. I was getting antsy, and thought this superstitious bit couldn't hurt.
Problem was, I RUINED it! I undercooked it big time and it came out raw and pink inside. He was so polite and picked at the cooked parts, but it was totally awful. I was so mad at myself because I ruined the entire purpose of it (to give him the subconscious thought that you'd make a good wife).
But propose he did. Thanks, under-cooked chicken!
@kessyud:The first time I made it, I undercooked it too! I totally ruined it, so I made it again a few days later.
I don't correlate a meal with him putting a ring on my finger, but it's a lighthearted story we can tell in the future, as it is in no way the reason we're getting engaged! :)
@vmec: LoL! I'm sure I'd have better luck with this method than cooking chicken!
I've made it twice. He calls it keep your man chicken. Whatevs!LOL It hasn't worked for me, but it was good. Cooks better in a gas oven though. I cook in n the apartment I lived in before we moved, then in our house. In our house was SO much better with the gas. Took a shorter amount of time to cook too.
@vmec: The amount of these I've given over the 2yrs we've been together, I should have a pile of diamond rings.LMAO
It TOTALLY worked for me!! We are in LDR and he came up the week of Christmas/NYE and i made it that week. The NEXT time he came up was for St. Pat's day and I got the ring then!!
He asked me to make that chicken thing i made over Christmas, it was good, so said "oh the engagement chicken receipe?" he cracked up, but that definitly stays on the GO TO list, it was pretty easy to make and so freakin good!
Completely unrelated, but you should try the Sweet Potato Queens' Death Chicken... it's a really good, rich chicken rice casserole. Supposedly the only legal way to do him in is to get him addicted to it. That, and it's good "funeral food" to bring to a wake because you just have cover and bake it for 2 hours.
i made it before i even knew it was engagment chicken. it definitely didn't work. in fact, he's not even a big fan. doesn't like the lemon, tastes like "pinesol". really? men...
I made engagement chicken only a few days ago! My leftovers are in the fridge right now!! lol. I actually mostly made it because I had a roaster chicken, and had just trimmed my herb garden, so was looking for something to slather parsley sage and thyme all over. I found the recipe online mostly by accident while googling recipes for chickens, then went out and procured some lemons. I figured it couldn't hurt my luck, and I needed to cook dinner anyhow. He actually really really loved the meal, but I think he was more into the rosemary potatos I served with it.
I made this in mid November 2010... proposal was in Feb 2011 on Vday! :o)
My bf loves lemon on his chicken! I think I'll try this...
Just the other day I sent him yet another e-mail with the ring I love telling him it was slightly discounted and the price of gold is going up, lol (just an excuse to send a reminder). And a couple days later he brought it up and we had a good laugh about it. Then we went to Seaside Saturday night to walk on the beach, and he pulls me around romantically and tells me "I'm going to marry you...it's coming. I won't make you wait long." We've been talking about marriage for a while (he more than me). This was the sweetest gesture on the topic thus far. That and going with me a couple months ago to see the ring and try it on (he had a big koolaid smile on his face when he saw it on my hand.
This chicken might be JUST what I need to move things along! :)
lol I made it and he proposed a month later.

For the past few months I've been reading in Glamour magazine about engagement chicken. Supposedy ladies who have made this chicken have gotten engaged shortly after making this dinner for their boyfriend. So you guys know I just HAD to try it. (It's been 7 years y'all, SEVEN YEARS and you know desperate times call for desperate measures. I will try anything to get the ball rolling faster.
Well I went out and bought the book which is titled "100 Recipes That Every Woman Should Know" and after a quick trip to my local Wal-Mart, got to cooking. I made it yesterday as his Father's Day dinner and it was a hit! He loved it and said it was the best dinner I ever made! As to the engagment aspect of the dinner...still waiting but maybe it will be soon! OR- maybe when he eats the leftovers for dinner today the magical effects of the engagement chicken will set it even more. LOL!
Have any of you ladies read about Glamour's Engagment Chicken or any old wives tales on how to get a man to propose?
