Hmm... what about something like this personalisable photo?

That way it's something to look forward to and be excited about (i.e. you could put the date of their wedding in) but it would also be appropriate to hang on after the wedding?
There's so much good stuff on etsy - there's a 'gift guide' section and there are some great ideas that are a little bit more 'out of the box' than photo albums or frames. I would check there for other great ideas!
This is something I really love. They're candles, for $20, and they can be refilled. I'm not sure it's exactly what you're looking for, or if it's good for her, but I put it on my registry... :)
I recently had a personalized photo made as an engagement gift on etsy. it came out great. i posted in the alchemy section and people submitted their bids. if you're looking for something more for her, how about something like this
or maybe a ring holder that she can put on her nightstand or the sink for when she takes her rings off. there are tons of styles on etsy.
Thanks for the suggestions! I found some pretty cool toasting flutes on there for this gift and can't wait til the package arrives.

hi ladies-
i need to buy an engagement gift for a friend and was thinking of perhaps purchasing from etsy for the first time. any ideas? they are pretty early in the process so although they have a venue (redwood grove) and a date, she doesn't have her colors picked out. when i search on etsy for wedding or engagement a zillion listings come up of mostly rings. all i can think of is photo frames/albums.
is there anything that you wish you would have gotten pre-wedding (not necessarily from etsy)? she's not super girly typically but is obviously very excited about the all the wedding details.
