I don't think you have to have an engagement party right when you get engaged. So that seems fine to me.
I think it shouldn't be a problem, it's a nice way to get a little bit of the Christmas wedding celebration you've always wanted.
It's also nice since people will probably already be together for the holidays so you aren't requiring them to make a special trip.

Hello,
So out "technical engagement" is going to be mid May and the wedding planned for August 2011 in Hawaii. However, part of me always wanted a Christmas wedding and I love the holidays. Would it be acceptable to ask my parents (who want to host a party) if I can have a Christmas cocktail engagement party in December? Or is that way too long to wait?
