I will be the matron of honor for my best friend. She’s throwing an engagement party. I didn’t have one myself, so I’m not sure how much people give.
Can anybody give me an idea of the proper amount for a gift? Note that we are in NY so a monetary gift is expected.

I’m from the NY area, and fiance is from Long Island and cash at engagement parties isn’t the norm. Most people gave us actual gifts.
Since a couple isn’t supposed to be registered before their engagement party, you can get them something they will use when they start their new lives together OR to help them wedding plan. Maybe ring holders, planning books (it’s nice to get one for the bride and one for the groom), a few bottles champagne and notes on instructing them when to open them—like “Open this bottle when you book your venue,” “Pop this bubbly when you say yes to the dress,” “Share this bottle exactly one month before the big day.”
I usually spend around $50-$100 on engagement gifts. I just got tray like this with my best friend’s and fiance’s last name and monogram for them from PreppyPlates.com We received one for our engagement party too, and love it!

@BrooklynWife: I love that!!!
OP, I’m also from Long Island, and for our engagement party I’d say the average couple gave $100-$150. We also had a bunch of restaurant gift cards, so that we could still go out but save for the wedding 🙂
