We had a very small engagement party, and received ONE gift. ;) My mom and grandma said, "we'll see what everyone else gets you," which turned out to be pretty much nothing, so they followed suit. ;) I didn't actually expect any gifts, though, so even the offer to base their gifts on what others were giving surprised me.
Anyway, as far as I knew, the engagement party is not a gift-giving event... I never would have thought to give someone anything other than a card for an engagement.
We got gifts from most of our guests. The ones that didn't give gift brought a card and a bottle of wine or champagne. I wasn't expecting gifts but sort of knew that it would turn out that way because that's just the norm in our circle. I always give gifts for engagement parties. We were both extremely grateful.
We got a major gift from Fh's parents, and small gifts from his family. Friends brought cards or chipped in to get us a nice bottle of wine (I'm a wine nut and they impressed me!).Other folks chipped in and roasted the pig for dinner, or made the cake so it was very very thoughtful. I think it depends on where you are though. I know my mother had never heard of an engagement party since she moved out to Oregon, but that they were the norm and MAJOR affairs back in Connecticut where she grew up.
My future sister-in-law and her husband threw my fiance and I our engagement party for mainly our friends and our immediate family (parents and siblings), and although we told everyone (who asked) not to bring anything and just to come and hang out, we still got a couple of gifts from friends. We were so appreciative, though. Really, the party was intended for our parents to meet all of our friends, as most of the guests were members of our wedding party (and for example, my mom didn't know my fiance's guys, and his parents didn't know my girls), but we had a great time. :)
I can't vote yet since the party isn't until 10/17 but we have gotten a few already. I doubt the younger crowd will get a gift but the older family members probably will, or more likely give $$$ in a card. That's pretty much what people do in my family. We're Italian. We're all about money in cards. If you've seen the wedding scene in Goodfellas you'll know what I'm talking about.
Our one friend who got us a gift was APPALLED that no one else brought a gift. We received cards from 3 friends, 1 gift from the aforementioned friend, and 2 bottles of wine (from the same people who gave cards). My mother thought it was shocking we registered before the engagement party, but we actually thought we would get more gifts than we did! (Plus, it was REALLY fun to register)
Our engagement party was a surprise (we weren't going to have one), and we got a lot of gifts. It was so sweet, but it felt weird opening them up in front of everyone!
I was surprised that we received gifts at our engagement party - but I really didn't know what to expect in the first place. I'd say about half the people attending gave us a card or a gift (like a bottle of wine) and the other half didn't.

We received gifts from all our guests, but in reading about other peoples parties it didn't seem like getting gifts were the norm. I was surprised because I've always given a gift at an e-party! :)
If you had an engagement party, did you receive gifts from all your guests?
