Our photographer gave us date options for e-pics, and then we got to choose one from there.  Ours were in October, and we were married in May. (We booked the photog in August).

Yea, engagement photos are a bit of a misnomer because first you need to hire a photographer.  Usually people focus on venue first and so it can be many months, depending on the length of the engagement, before one takes engagement photos.

My advice would be to table planning until 1 year in advance.  Pick your venue, pick you photographer, then take engagement photos.

aspiringpastrychef86:  we’re getting our photos done this wednesday and our wedding is not until Sept next year. we didnt want to wait until spring – as that’s when we plan on sending out STD’s – as all the flowers/trees/grass will be dead still. So now that its still warm, there’s no snow and the flowers are still colorful, we chose to do it now. so i guess it depends on a few things – your budget, your photographer, your local and what time of year you want to have your photos in.

aspiringpastrychef86:  My FI and I have been engaged since Dec. 2013. We are not getting married until Oct. 2017 so that we can finish school and get settled into a career. This being said, we have not done engaement photos yet, but in a year or two we will be getting them done… Sometime before the wedding lol I personally am happy about waiting so I can try to get to a weight I am comrftable with. 🙂

aspiringpastrychef86:  Unless you NEED them for something, I would encourage you to wait until you have a date set and photographer hired. Engagement photos are a great way to build a connection with your photographer so that you’re more comfortable on your wedding day. If you don’t have need for them it would seem silly to hire a photographer to take them, when you aren’t ready to book for your wedding. Some people use their photos for save-the-dates or other wedding related projects, while others just do them to have nice professional photos in non-wedding clothing. The only scenario where it’s a time crunch is if you need them for something.

I agree with the previous posters. In your situation, I would definitely wait on the engagement photos.  I would wait until you have a clear timeline and are further along in the wedding planning process.  As it has been said, the engagement photography is a way for you to get to know the photographer who may be shooting your wedding.
