We did ours about 2 months before our wedding. But you really can do it whenever you want, it's something to get out of the way. We should not have done it that close to our date, it was just one more thing to stress about. You have so much time, I would pick the season that you want pictures in and do it then. Since you will have your wedding pictures in the fall, maybe you want your engagement pictures in the spring or summer.... oh wait you're in arizona!! HA! Do you even have seasons?!
Lol! Ya, Seasons... what is that! Summer would not be a good idea! I love the winter, but we don't really get much of that... I guess December would be our "winter" month. HA! A year... is that too long from our wedding? Guess not...
We did ours about 6 months out from the wedding. I think a year would be fine. In fact, wouldn't it be cute if you scheduled your photos for one year before the wedding date? Sentimental and sappy, I know... :)

I would say a year, that's what we are/ were planning on doing, we got engaged in 12-07, planned the wedding for 12-10, now that we moved the wedding up to next May, we are getting are engagement pictures done next week, so still around a year apart.
Too bad you don't have seasons! Maybe if you want variety, do some early evening/night pictures?
When my cousin got married, they sent out these really cute save the date cards with their picture on it. I think that is a great idea, so now that I'm engaged I'm planning on getting my engagement photos taken as soon as possible, so that I will be able to use them for save the date cards and other things.
Hmmm...okay I'll be the first crazy one! I got mine done about 1 month after I got engaged (engaged in October 08) even though our wedding isn't until Sept 2010. I was just too excited!!
We've been engaged nearly 4 mos now (wow, has it really been that long?) and we still haven't done them yet, mostly due to the money factor as I'm still looking for a job. We hope to do them sometime in the fall though, simply because it's too muggy around here to do them in the summer and we both love the fall season. I guess that puts it at about 8 mos prior to the wedding.
There really is no right or wrong time - do them whenever you want to and feel you can afford them!
I have to find the right clothes, haircut, and tone up....sheesh..our wedding is 4 months away. :) I should get to it!

My FI and I aren't getting married until November 2010... how many months before should we take our engagement pics?
