We had ours taken in DC on a Sunday morning and it wasn't as bad as you think it'd be. :) I saw a couple that had some photos taken after their wedding at the Manassas Battlefield. They turned out pretty great. Here's the link in case you're interested in something like that.
we did union station and lincoln monument. it wasnt bad at all.... just go on an off time not rush hour.
for places in NoVA - have you thought of Great Falls, Roosevelt Island, or old town Alexandria?? tons of interesting nooks and crannies.
any special places for you and your FH in the area? i would do something significant.
we picked our places because he proposed at lincoln monument and union station represents how much we like to travel.
For one, sunrise in any city provides gorgeous light and empty surroundings. Even someplace crazy like DC :-)
Secondly, it should be someplace that represents your lives and personalities. Adventurous? Go to Great Falls. DC lovers? Monuments (at sunrise, sunset will be PACKED in summer especially), Athletes? Parks around the city that you may play at, Ecclectic? Georgetown or Old Town, Alexandria.
Why are you there?
Are you both transplanted? find a common interest.
Are you from there? Find a common "local" thing about the two of you. i.e. same HS? Same neighborhood? Same favorite spot where you met? Favorite coffee house?
Both Alumni of a university? I just did a Georgetown Campus shoot in the early evening and it wasn't crowded at all. in fact, there's a lot of spots on campus that you can use that won't even LOOK like Georgetown university :-)
Bottom line, is you want to find something that lends itself to who you are as a couple. It helps make you more comfortable and helps bring who you are into the picture even more.
Definitely pick a spot that has meaning to you as a couple. A good photog can make (just about) anyplace look good!
That said, NoVa has TONS of pretty parks/historic sites. Old Town Alexandria for a quaint yet urban/marine look, any one of the local battlefields for a wide-open sky look, an old schoolhouse or mill for something rustic...you can find historic sites through the Fairfax County Parks website: www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks. Northern VA Regional Park Authority has some nice spots too: www.nvrpa.org. As much as I love Great Falls, it does tend to get crowded on weekends. Good luck!

Hi Hive!
I need your help! My FI and I need to get our engagement pictures done, but I don't know where to do them. He is a pretty shy person so he has completely nixed going to DC and doing the monuments or going to a busy place like Georgetown. I don't want him to be uncomfortable in the pics... they won't look right.
Can you guys give me any recommendations on what we should do? I don't know of any other NoVA/DC places that aren't crowded. :(
