I was thinking about getting my bf an engagement present when he proposes. Has anyone done this before or heard of it being done? If so can you give suggestions as to what I should get?

I honestly gave my FI his own engagement ring (his "training ring") and hid it in a  bag of beef jerky. Yep, he loved it. lol.

Yes, i'm getting him a really nice watch.  We discussed it and i honestly felt a little uncomfortable with how much he was spending on a ring, so we decided i'd buy him an engagement watch and we'd skip wedding gifts.  It makes sense for us because we have the money now but won't necessarily have it when the actual wedding comes along!

My only issue is when to give it to him. i think i'm going to buy it as soon as he proposes and then find a fun time to "propose" back to him :)

I'd read somewhere once that a watch was the traditional engagement gift for a man and I've always been hooked on that idea.

Just the other day in the car SO says, 'I need a new watch to take to OCS. My old one broke, piece of crap. It was a piece of crap wasn't it?' (yes talking to himself and confirming his own opinon of the watch, too cute!) Of course my little alarm went off in my head. I'd love to buy him a watch but really right now he just needs a decent watch for keeping time while running and such but I can't wait to get him a nice watch to wear to work and stuff everyday. I was even eyeing up one of our coworkers watches while he was winding it a few weeks ago.

I feel it is unfair that men are expected to buy the e-ring and women aren't required to buy anything. Therefore I bought my FI a PS3. I chose that because it has the blu-ray player, which I can use!

I also feel it's a bit unfair how much he's spending on the ring.  we've talked about it and decided that i'm going to get him Lasik surgery!  I had it done a couple years ago, and i'm thrilled with the results... he has worse vision than what i had before, so we think it will be a perfect, practical thing for him!

You gals are GREAT!!  I never thought to buy him an engagement gift...but, I am SO getting him an engagement watch!!  My BF doesn't wear jewelry and I think it'll be a way for him to ease *hehe* into wearing his wedding band.

I was planning on getting him a pair of shoes he wanted but wouldn't buy for himself. Not in line price wise with the engagement ring, but he liked the idea (we discussed it). I did buy the shoes and I'm holding onto them until he actually proposes, I think he's waiting on the custom ring to be done.

Meanwhile...his car broke down. So we bought a car for him together. We also bought the ring together. So...basically, the ring is my engagement present and the car is his. Ahhhh...domestic bliss. I get bling, he gets speed.  :)

I was planning on buying him something he really wants but won't buy for himself. I like the idea of a watch but we bought him a really nice one on our cruise a couple years ago and I think he has worn it twice. So he bought himself and xbox awhile ago and there is this new thing coming out called Xbox Natal. Watch the video at http://www.xboxnatal.net/ its pretty cool. It's more Wii style games but there is no controller, your body is the controller. It's pretty sweet and something I think we would have fun with together. I'm not sure when it's supposed to come out but I don't mind making him wait a little...after all the waiting I've done :-P
