I take off my engagement ring that'll go with my wedding band and wear a different ring that he gave me while I'm at work too. I work in a group home and I don't want to risk it being taken or get ruined somehow. I will wear them as a set when I'm not at work though after I get married.
Make absolutely sure that it won't hurt FI's feelings if you change it to a necklace. And if he's fine with it, I would go for it. I'm in healthcare, and chose a simple band for my engagement ring (it will double as my wedding band) for this very reason.
I voted for wear it on my right hand, but I usually don't wear it at work. I work in health care too, and have a wide, flat, simple wedding band. I almost always wear the wedding ring and it works for me. My engagement ring is not the traditional solitaire, it has a wider band so I really can't wear it with my wedding band anyway, and it also has a slit in it so stuff gets in the slit. Ew.
I think putting the diamond in a necklace, if you're more likely to wear it (and as long as your FI agrees too) is a great idea!
@nmsoonerbride: I wish I had two bands then I would wear it. It's not even the stones it's the solitaire center stone that bothers me with gloves and washing hands a million times a day. That's a good idea with the two bands.
@Ale:yeah, a big (or even a small) diamond is just a pain at work. I think the necklace is a great idea!
We actually decided to buy a separate bridal set because my e-ring was a very cheap solitaire which was all we could afford at the time of proposal. I won't wear my e-ring at all.
I work healthcare too and wear my ring all the time, and will wear both. the only time i'll take them off is when i make meatloaf or am really getting my hands messed up.

Lately I've seen so many different things that people do with their engagement rings after the wedding...
I don't wear my engagement ring or the wedding band at all because I work in health care. I got myself a plain white gold wedding band for work and don't even take it off most days.
And sometimes feel like I didn't even need the engagement ring at all, I come from another country where there is no such a thing. My engagement ring is a solitaire so I am very tempted to put it into a bezel set necklace....
